GDSS Lokoja wins maiden GYB Inter-School Athletics Championships

Government Day Secondary School, GDSS Lokoja has emerged champions of the 2018 'GYB Inter-School Athletics Championships' held at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja on Friday.

The students of the GDSS Lokoja garnered a total of 99 points to claim the overall champions' trophy after participating in various athletics events.

Community Secondary School, CSS Gegu-Beki from Kogi-Koto Local Government came second with 84 total points while Government Science Secondary School, GSSS Lokoja gathered 59 total points to end third at the phase one of the championships which comprises of public schools from Ajaokuta, Lokoja and Kogi-Koto LGAs of Kogi State.

Commissioner of Youths and Sports in the state, Comrade Sanni Ogu Salisu who was a special guest at the final expressed delight with the performance of the athletes which he promised would be harnessed and nurtured to greatness for them to be useful for state and the country.

He commended the Kogi State Teaching Service Commission and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for putting up such a colorful program just as he gave assurance of his ministry's continuous support to discover sporting talents from schools.
 

"I feel honored to be here today among these great talents, what we are witnessing today is a clear indication that Kogi State cannot be second when it comes to sports, the spirit and enthusiasm they displayed in various events is highly commendable, this program will help us to produce the best athletes for the upcoming School Sports Festival and the National Youth Games.

"For me, there's no winner or loser here because every participating students have learned one thing or more that would help them to give more when they participate.

"I want to commend the my colleague from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the officers from the Teaching Service Commission for bringing this up, in our part at the Ministry of Youths and Sports, we will continue to encourage youths, especially students to take active participation in sports and provide enabling environments for talents to grow which will make the state and country proud in the near future," he said. 

Honorable Victor Omofaiye, Chairman House Committee on Education and a member representing Ijumu Constituency at the Kogi State House Assembly charged the wards to build on what they have displayed at the championships as he believed it would aide them 

Earlier, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology in Kogi State, Mrs Rosemary Ojochenemi Oshikoya explained that the championships would have much effects on the part of participating students to take care of their health status, unity and end social vices.

She disclosed that similar championships would soon be organized for other six zones in the state after which the best among the schools in the state would compete for honors and trophies at the state athletics championships later in the year. 

Chairman of Kogi State Teaching Service Commission, Afolabi Jospeh Raji who commended the state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello for approving the championships within shirt time of notice said such event ha seven used to foster unity among students of various schools in the state adding that other sporting activities would soon be organized by the commission.
