Dare, the Agbaakin of Ogbomosoland, a high Chief, organised the competition as part of activities lined up for the 40 days Fidau prayers in honour of the late paramount ruler.

Amongst dignitaries that spoke at the event was the former Director of Kwara State Sports Council, Mr Tunde Kazeem who described the Minister as an exemplary performer whose accessibility and humility is unparalleled for leaders of his ilk. President of the Ogbomoso Community Youth Forum, Rev. Peter Olaleye commended Dare for not only initiating the table-tennis competition but for investing in the on-going construction of a befitting Sports centre for the town. "The Minister is an empathetic leader with a heart for the people. Even though we tried to dodge his donation because we didn't request for it, he found a creative way to get it to us and this hastened the rehabilitation of that road, for the benefit of the people," Rev. Olaleye added.

Sunday Dare hails Sports, Youth Ministry staff for commitment over landmark achievements

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare Thursday saluted the tenacity and hard-work of staff of the Ministry, stating his achievement over the past two years wouldn't have been possible without their cooperation.

Speaking at the Town Hall meeting organised for Staff of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Dare lauded the commitment of the rank and file and the steadfastness of management led by the Permanent Secretary in bringing to fruition initiatives and programmes conceptualised upon his ascendancy.

"I believe sometimes a chain is only as strong as its weakest point. So the work I'm able to achieve as a Minister is made possible because there is a cleaner somewhere, who cleans my office, religiously everyday. The Perm Sec is able to do his work because junior officers treats the file, and it comes up through the ranks, until it gets to his office".

"As a Director, if your Assistant Director or Principal Officers under you do not do their work, you cannot direct. And as a Minister, unless I have everyone on that chain, either at the weak points or at the strong points doing their job, I cannot achieve, so it is a sum total, when it comes to leading any Ministry, moreso, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development", Dare buttressed.

Reeling out achievements of the Ministry, the Minister listed the N75bn Nigeria Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) spanning 2020 to 2023, the re-classification of Sports from recreation to business, the devotion of N188bn for Youth and Sports Development, N60bn and N88bn respectively, in the new National Development Plan (2021-2025) as major highlights.

In his remarks, the Ministry staff's union leader, Musa Abba expressed gratitude to the Minister for making welfare of staff a priority since his assumption of office. "Just yesterday, we got alert of bonuses, Christmas for us, indeed came early and we are grateful to the Honourable Minister for the kind gesture and innovations he has brought to bear on the Ministry, since his assumption of office".

In recognition of Dare's giant strides, the union leader led the staff to confer an award of "The Best Minister of the Year" on the Minister, assuring him of their continued unalloyed support through his tenure.

Ministry of Works, Housing ejects unauthorized developers from Lagos National Stadium Complex, concludes verification exercise

The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing has ejected some unauthorized developers putting up building projects on some parts of the land acquired by the Federal Government for the construction of the National Stadium Complex in Surulere, Lagos.

The Ministry has also closed down the construction sites of these developers and sealed off their operations.

Making this known in his office in Abuja, during the presentation of the 'Report On Field Verification Exercise/Acquisition Of National Stadium Complex, Surulere, Lagos' on Tuesday, the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola said these decisions became necessary to protect Government land and assets.

His words: "The Ministry of Works and Housing is the custodian of Government land and assets and so when we were briefed about the encroachment on part of the land acquired by the Federal Government for the construction of the National Stadium in Lagos many years ago, in 1960 and 1973, we had to follow it up.

"The Ministry put together a very strong team to investigate the matter immediately and thoroughly. I also visited the sites personally to have first hand knowledge and see things for myself.

"Once our investigative team was able to establish the facts about Government ownership of the land and that those developers were unauthorized, we invited the Lagos Police Command to close down their  construction sites and seal off their operations. All these were done on behalf of the Ministry of Sports because this land falls directly under your jurisdiction."

Before clamping down on the builders and developers, surveyors and land experts in the Ministry of Works and Housing also went through many official documents and gazettes to ascertain the scale of the acquisition of the land by Government in 1960 and 1973.

Mrs Angela Great-Edereka, the Director of Lands, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, confirmed that official documents show the land was legally acquired by Government in 1960 and 1973.

In his remarks, the Sports Minister Sunday Dare thanked his counterpart in the Works and Housing Ministry for the professional handling of the matter.

Dare then called for collaboration on the best way to put the recovered land to use.

"We will continue to seek your professional inputs and guidance on how best to use this land to prevent illegal occupants and unauthorized persons from taking them over," Dare concluded.

Sunday Dare and his many landmark achievements in Nigeria Youth and Sports Development

He is a man that will be remembered for his many legacies even while in office. He starts what others never thought of. In just under 3 years of his administration, Sports minister Sunday Dare has broken records and has given stakeholders too many to remember.

His staff call him Mr Record Breaker, his admirers call him Mr Achiever, his colleagues call him the pacesetter, his bosses call him the silent achiever and some others just love to call him the BRAINBOX.

Welcome to the World of Sunday Akin Dare. A man who has continued to thrive where others failed.

Today, this reporter has taken time to highlight FIVE of Sunday Dare's outstanding achievements. These are five of the best. The very best. Read along.

1. THE NATIONAL YOUTH CONFERENCE

For the very first time in the history of Nigeria youth and sports Ministry, there came a minister who has decided to create a platform for Nigeria youths to air their views, state their grievances and be heard by their leaders. On Wednesday in Abuja, Nigeria's vice president Yemi Osinbajo was special guest of honor as youths and delegates from all parts of the country converged on Abuja. The Vice president, used the ocassion of the conference to appeal to Nigeria youths to channel their energies into meaningful ventures and desist from negative vices like kidnapping, armed robbery, drug abuse and terrorism. He advised them to always see dialogue as a means of settling whatever grievances they have with government instead of indulging in violence.

2. THE NATIONAL YOUTH INVESTMENT FUND

For the very first time in the history of the youth and sports Ministry, the federal government of Nigeria approved 75billon naira for the National Youth Investment Fund. That too, is one of the landmark achievements of Chief Sunday Dare. On assumption of office in 2019, Dare said his priority us to improve the lives of Nigeria youths and he took the bold step by coming up with an initiative that allows Nigeria youths to bring up creative ideas that government will support with small loans. That way, many have started doing small businesses instead of waiting for white collar jobs.

3. NYSC SALARY INCREMENT

Yes it happened after a proposal submitted by Sunday Dare got express approval from the presidency. Before his appointment as Nigerua sports minister, Youth corpers in the country were on a monthly take home of 19,800 naira but Sunday Dare came and changed their story. Presently, the take home pay for Nigeria youth corpers is 33,000 naira monthly.

4. NIGERIA MADE HISTORY AT WORLD ATHLETICS UNDER 20 CHAMPIONSHIP

Nigeria’s U-20 track and field athletes made history at the biennial World Athletics U20 championships after finishing third on the overall medals table with an unprecedented haul of four gold and three bronze medals.

The best Nigeria had achieved on the medals table prior to the Kenya event, was her seventh-placed finish at the third edition of the championship in 1990 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where they won two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

The four gold medals won at the championships in Nairobi, Kenya is the highest Nigeria has won, two more than the country has ever won in any edition of the championships.

Nigeria’s 4x400m mixed relay team began the unprecedented haul with its historic, championships record-setting performance (3:19.70CR) on the opening day of the championships.

5. INTRODUCTION OF THE ADOPT A SPORT OR AN ATHLETE INITIATIVE

4. The Sports Ministry under the leadership of Sunday Dare developed and implemented a Private Public Partnership model for sports, under the 'Adopt an Athlete' initiative about 20 athletes were adopted with some getting $10,000 and others $20,000.

Also about Two Hundred and Thirty Thousand Dollars($230,000) was raised for the men and women basketball teams under this initiative, the Ministry was also able to secure direct financial support for about 22 Nigerian athletes towards their training for the Olympics and the under 20 World championship.

These are just a few of the many brilliant achievements of the ministry under Sunday Dare. Remember that it was under this administration that the National stadium Abuja and Lagos that were left moribund for years, came back to life. Dare got the private sector to begin work and as at last week, the Moshood Abiola stadium in Abuja is almost 96% completed and that of Lagos is undergoing steady progress. He also introduced  a special trust fund to help retired Nigeria sports men and women.

In the years to come, the story of Nigeria youth and sports development when told, will not be complete without a mention of this Oyo state born administrator who came, saw and has conquered where his predecessors failed.

Nigeria at 61: Only with deliberate, scalable investment in our youth can Nigeria become greater - Sunday Dare

Today, Friday, October 1, 2021, as Nigeria clocks 61 years of independence, It has been 61 years of remarkable journey characterised by challenges, struggles and triumphs.

As the Minister of Youth and Sports Development of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I pledge my loyalty to Nigeria and look to her future with hope and optimism.

As a Ministry, we have adopted a number of programmes specially designed to uplift our youth, and the good news is that these programmes are already yielding positive results.

Nigeria's greatest natural resource is her youth. Only with deliberate, scalable investment in our youth can Nigeria become greater than she is today.

Our DEEL initiative which focuses on Digital Literacy and Skills Acquisition, Entrepreneurship, Employability and Leadership has led to some crucial breakthrough collaborations and partnerships with some technological giants and leading E-Commerce solutions platforms. These partnerships are guaranteed to get at least 200,000 youth trained and placed in Entrepreneurship by 2023. The Ministry’s Training into Enterprise continues to deliver results across the country. We appreciate many other Ministries, Departments and Agencies who also contribute to the training and empowerment of the youth in Nigeria.

A lot of our youth are  being empowered through the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund(NYIF). Over 5,225 have benefited and recently over 20,000’have been screened and shortlisted for the final stage of training and funds disbursement.

In the area of sports development, youth oriented programmes like the 'Adopt-an-Athlete' and 'Talent Hunt Program initiatives have been central to all our activities. These initiatives have led to podium finishes at the recent Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics Games, as well as the World U-20 Athletics Championships in Nairobi, Kenya with Nigeria hauling 19 medals from these competitions. Just recently, the Nigeria women basket ball team, D’Tigress won the Afro Basketball Gold for the 3rd consecutive time making them the best women basketball team in Africa.

Many young talents in all sports have been identified, a lot more will be identified. These talents will be adopted, harnessed, supported, financed and exposed to the best facilities, coaching and training programmes possible so they can become world beaters in the near future.

As a Ministry, we have also embarked on an aggressive drive to upgrade our sporting facilities so that our sports men and women can utilise them optimally.

The national stadia in Lagos and Abuja have had the football pitches of their mainbowls regrassed; because we know that great talents can only be birthed in an enabling environment and our infrastructure is key to creating it.

In addition, towards ensuring that sports enthusiasts at the grassroots have access to quality sporting facilities, the football pitch of the Daura Township Stadium in Daura, Katsina State has been completely rehabilitated and boasts of having one of the most modern synthetic AstroTurf pitches in Nigeria.

The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development also ensured the classification of sports as a business and not mere recreation.

We believe more glorious years are ahead for the Nigerian youth in all spheres of their endeavours.

Happy 61st independence anniversary Nigeria!

Youth/Sports Development: Sunday Dare holds tripartite talks with Algerian, Egyptian counterparts

Minister of youth and sports Development Mr Sunday Dare on Tuesday in Abuja held a Tripartite meeting with his counterparts from Algeria and Egypt on how to foster  mutual benefits.

The meeting formed part of activities marking the 40th anniversary of Association of National Olympic Committees in Africa (ANOCA) taking place in Abuja..

Speaking during  the meeting, Dare said, "when I visited Egypt some three months ago, we had a joint meeting where we reviewed youth and Sports Development of both countries and explored common areas  we can leverage on. We have spent the past few weeks trying  to see which  areas can be best explored.  We agreed that  he would either  come to Abuja or I would visit  Cairo. Gladly, he has come to Abuja and we want to warmly welcome him.

"It is also so important to welcome the Minister of Youth and Sports Development from Algeria who was the Chairman of the Anti Corruption War in Algeria, the equivalent of our  EFCC chairman before he became the Minister.

"The population of Youth in Africa, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt is growing in leaps and bounds. These youth need to be engaged either by giving them employment, or by keeping them busy through sports and competition, providing them finance to start their own businesses or by simply ensuring that we give them the digital skills that they need. So, for youth development there are four critical areas; Digital Skills and Digital Literacy for the digital economy for the 24th century. How do we operate this aspect because we have that challenge and I am sure we will know  whether it's the same challenge.

"The youths are restless, if they are not engaged in productive activities, they go on riot, go into drug abuse and  other vices. We see sports as a  tool for unity and  tool to keep the youth busy. We believe that when a youth goes to practice wrestling in the morning,  does same  in the evening all he wants to do is to  eat dinner and sleep. But when he sits in the morning, 14 hours everyday doing nothing, he can be recruited for protest or recruited for  any kind of vices. Sports can be used  as a tool to promote peace and unity

"Also, there is the need to empower our youth,  give them  the finance and the resource they need to become self-employed, to become entrepreneurs and wealth creators.

"Government can no longer employ  all the youth. Government jobs are not available but the youth have  problems with banks to access loans where  the interest rate in this country is about 21-24% . In  Nigeria, we were able to establish the youth investment fund at an interest rate of 5% single digit, the lowest and we think that would help to turn our youths to entrepreneurs. I think these are the key major areas. I can provide another example when it comes to sports. It is important that we have inter-country tournament and championship beyond what we do in Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco.  We can come together and organise a Volleyball Tournament,  or an Athletics Championship. It's  miniature skills but it's impactful.   In athletics, some points could be  gained and  ranking improved. We can even organize football matches; we just did a six  -Nation football  tournament which the FIFA  and  CAF presidents came. It had six top female  countries  in Africa  participate and it was an exciting time where  they  also got points for participating.

"Also, we can look at youth exchange, our youths love to travel, sadly some of them travel illegally. We can have them  make this travel legally and be  more impactful. We will design a youth exchange between our countries. From Egypt  and Algeria we may have  50 youths selected by Egyptian Ministy or the Algerian Ministry  have a program in  Nigeria which they will fit into, whether it is  a Sports event,  digital skill or entrepreneurship skills program. We can even start with 10 youth  for a  month exchange program. That was the practice in the past but it stopped. But  youths  in Algeria, Egypt and Nigeria want the same thing. They want  jobs,  capital to start  businesses, they want to build a career, they want government to support them and  set them on the path of progress. I think these are the critical areas we can work on. We will mention the programs that we have, but the MOU will look at the four critical areas. We  start to look at what program does Egypt, Algeria or Nigeria have in sports  that are alike and  design such programs as a module for the youth of our country.

In his response,  the  Algerian Youth and sports Minister Abderezak Sebagag said"I wish to thank the Minister of Youth and Sports Development from Nigeria and Egypt.

"Concerning the  developmental policy that we want to engage our youth in our respective countries, especially the aspect of improving their digital skills, we have a volunteer program in Algeria.

The Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Dr. Ashraf Sobhi also affirmed

"We as a Ministry, we will work as one country  in an effort to develop  youth and sports in Africa. With the scheme from  the Honourable Youth and Sports Minister from Nigeria , we can seek  how to work  together.

"We should use  our roles and positions as Ministers of youth and sports to  promote our vision and development.  If we work together,  our   development and  plans can become reality"

"We look at the sports part of the youth activities, we look at sports as a leisure,  as  recreation, as  competition and  tournament. Actually we have to look at Sports as a product to shield the youth from vices in their society. In Egypt, we have a full strategy merging  youth and sports. Basically we use  sports development to   aid education  till  2052.

"We are developing our premises, which means we are developing our facilities and sports facilities because without  good facilities we can't  actualize our plans  for the  future", he concluded.

Sports Minister Extols Leadership Qualities of Musa Kida

He said the qualities of Engr Musa Kida will further be needed to place the sport in an enviable position worldwide. That winning three trophies in four years is a commendable feat.

Nigeria's D'Tigress beat Mali on Sunday to emerge African Champions for the third consecutive time, affirming their position as the African queens of the court.

"I want to congratulate them for winning the Afrobasketball trophy and that is gold, you can see the Golden Cup here for third consecutive time.

"They have shown a rare dominance, the dominance of the women basketball terrain by D'Tigress from the African continent, I can say it's now undisputable. We have seen how they are also blending the home based players with the foreign players that is the DNA of our Sports as a country whether it is basketball or football, that blend always works for us.

"I want to thank each and every player, those that went to the Olympics, those that went to Senegal and those that went to Cameroon, that entire team has always done this country proud and I know that they have more victories ahead of them.

"I also thank them for putting Nigeria on the global map of basketball, the same goes to D'Tigers. I can now say that Nigeria is truly a basketball nation.

"We are happy that this is also a benefitting present to Mr President Muhammadu Buhari and the entire country as we are about to celebrate the 61st Independence Day Anniversary." Dare concluded.

 By Raymond Nwaduba

Nigeria Basketball Federation caretaker committee chairman, Engr. Musa Kida has showered encomiums on the Minister of Sports & Youths Development, Chief Sunday Dare for his sincere and genuine efforts daily in trying to look for the best possible way in finding a lasting solution to the imbroglio within the basketball fraternity, which has thwarted the development of the sport.

Speaking at a press parley with newsmen at the Park Inn by Radisson Serviced Apartments in Victoria Island, Lagos, the NBBF boss was full of praises and appreciation for the yeoman’s job by the honourable minister to see that all warring factions sheathe their swords and reach a truce, which will usher in a conducive environment for an all-round sustainable growth in basketball in Nigeria.

“If there was no enabling environment, there is no way we could have performed our functions. There is no way we would have been able to do what we needed to do. There is no way we could have had the flexibility to do what we did in other for these results to come in the last couple of years.

“So on that note, we want to in all sincerity thank the Honourable minister of Sports, Hon. Sunday Dare, ‘Egba Akin’, who every day I can tell you, looks for the best way of setting the environment and encouraging the environment to be the best it can.

“We all know it’s not easy, that Africans and Nigerians expects that every match we play we should win. Of course, it is his responsibility to ensure we win; but it is also his responsibility to make sure that he allows us as administrators and create an enabling environment for us to do our jobs.

“So on that note, I want to sincerely thank him for his understanding, said and not said, and also for his encouragement, and his own ministry which we have had expert opinions coming from themselves, very tested people in the ministry.

Youth and Sports Development Minister Sunday Dare has challenged members of the Nigeria senior national Women's football team- Super Falcons to learn from Tuesday's loss to South Africa's Bayana Bayana in the final game of the Aisha Buhari Cup and bounce back.

"There is another opportunity around the corner. I am happy that we do not have any major injuries to any of you. So you can return to your clubs in good condition and be back for your next assignment in great shape.
