FC Ifeanyi Ubah of Nnewi has emerged champions of the 2016 men’s Federation Cup competition after defeating contenders Nasarawa United FC 5-4 on penalties in a pulsating final at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, Sunday evening.
Both teams had ended 0-0 at regulation time before the mandatory penalty shootout in which FC IfeanyiUbah’s goalkeeper Uche Okafor stopped one to give his side victory.
The finals watched by Nasarawa State Governor Umar Tanko Al-Makura, Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Deji Tinubu and the full complement of the Executive Committee and Management of the Nigeria Football Federation led by Presudent Amaju Melvin Pinnick in company with his Vice Presidents Seyi Akinwunmi and Shehu Dikko, chairman of the League Management Company.
In the shootout, Seun Sogbeso whose goal from the penalty spot lifted Nasarawa United to the final at the expense of Enyimba FC in Ibadan, saw his tame kick saved by Warriors’ goalkeeper Uche Okafor to hand the trophy to the boys from Nnewi.
In the women’s final, Rafiat Sule had put Bayelsa Queens ahead but Rivers Angels equalized through a well –taken free kick by Osinachi Ohale. The Angels proceeded to win 5-3 in the penalty shootout.
Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Hon. Silas Agara, Rivers State Commissioner of Sports, Hon. Boma Iyaye and Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr were also among the dignitaries that watched Sunday’s showpiece.
