NPFL: Ilechukwu confident of making history with Rangers

Newly appointed Rangers International head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu believes he already has all the necessary ingredients in place to make his time at the Cathedral a success.

Addressing Let's Gist Naija Football during an interview session on Sunday, the former MFM FC, Heartland and Plateau United boss explained what attracted him to the Flying Antelopes, the legacy left by his predecessor Abdu Maikaba and what he hopes to achieve at the club.

Q: Historically, Rangers International is one of the biggest teams as far as Nigerian football is concerned, but the club has underachieved in recent times with their recent league success being the title in 2016. What are you plans to bring back the glory days of the Flying Antelopes?

Ilechukwu: Rangers International is one of the biggest teams in Nigeria. We would take things one at a time, it's very important to start the foundation gradually.

Q: What attracted you to the seven-time NPFL champions? How do you hope to improve on the legacy left by coach Abdu Maikaba? A lot are curious about which system you will adopt at Rangers. What should we expect in terms of the way you want the team to play, any plans for players in the youth team of the club?

Ilechukwu: Coach Abdu Maikaba did very well for Rangers in the 2022/23 season. Don't forget that he is one of the best brains we have in Nigeria. The team finished second in the Federation Cup despite their struggles in the league. Don't forget that Rangers played away from home throughout last season. Maikaba did a great job, I will continue from there. The technical decision and playing style of the team would come from me. The financial aspect is very important. We also need to look at the Academy and see what is on ground. I intend to give a couple of young players the chance to showcase themselves. We need to build for the future. The age of the players is very essential because of the business part of it for Rangers.

Q: Big names like Daniel Anyiam, Kosta Papić, Chairman Christian Chukwu, Alphonsus Dike, Okey Emordi, Imama Amapakabo, Gbenga Ogunbote and Abdu Maikaba have managed Rangers in the past. Does that make you nervous as the new custodian of the Cathedral? Do you have any fear of the heightened pressure of expectations in Enugu?

Ilechukwu: The big names you mentioned are my teachers, mentors and fathers. I have worked with a lot of big coaches in the national team and learned a lot. I have the experience needed to put Rangers back in the map. Rangers is a big club and there is no excuse not to deliver. I want to concentrate on the job and achieve beyond what other coaches have done for the club.

Q: You say that your current team has the potential to "capture the fans' imagination". What makes you so confident?

Ilechukwu: Ilechukwu is one of the best in terms of managerial skills. As a Manager you need to give people freedom of speech and find a way to bring out the best from them. No is an Island. You can't be successful without people crucifying and stating their minds. I am ready to answer question at anytime. All these would help us raise a formidable team capable of competing.

Q: What do you have to say about the report that linked you back to MFM before taking up the Rangers job?

Ilechukwu: MFM FC is me and I'm MFM FC as well. Anything that has to do with MFM FC is something I am usually careful about. They trained, built and nurtured me. MFM FC gave me the chance, confidence, belief and picked me from nowhere. After God, it is MFM. The church is like my parents. I hope MFM FC will return to what it used to be with our support. For now, I'm the coach of Rangers International and don't want to be distracted. But there are so many things to be done for MFM FC return to it glory days. One day we would be on our knees to beg Daddy DK Olukoya to bring MFM FC back.

Q: Nigerian clubs have struggled on the continent for more than a decade now. From your experiences at MFM and Plateau United, what do you think is missing and how can we fix these things to start competing favourably on the continent?

Ilechukwu: NPFL clubs would continue to struggle because we don't keep our best players at the end of the season. They go to teams who will compete against us on the continent. You can't compel a player who will pick up two to three million naira at a foreign club to stay in the NPFL. The money we pay in the league isn't enough to keep our top players. You see them travelling to Tanzania, Egypt and Algeria. But you look at the infrastructure and structure these countries have spent a lot. I usually ask myself why should a player go to Zambia? When you also look at the economic gains blaming the player isn't needed because he will earn more there. We also prepare late and have failed to sort out our travelling arrangements too.

Q: What is the motivational factor anytime you walk out of the tunnel?

Ilechukwu: It's the crowd. Whenever I see the fans, this gives me joy. The morale is always there when I see the crowd and this makes go extra mile on the touchline on matchdays.

Q: What is your dream job in the Nigerian League?

Ilechukwu: Coaches don't give job. I just want to do any job I'm given. Everything is time, you can't stop time.

Q: After a bad day in office, how do you recover from the mental stress and disappointment that comes from losing a game? Is there anything or someone who makes the recovery process quicker?

Ilechukwu: I usually disappointed after any bad day in office. When this happens, I try to take a shower and rest. After that,  I listen to Music and Dance.

Q: You became a coach at a very young age, what inspired you to coaching instead at that young age Of all the places you worked in the past as a coach, which of these adventures would you say is the most challenging Name five most talented players you have managed as a coach in the past?

Ilechukwu: As an Anambra man who believes so much in business, MFM Pastors really forced and encouraged me a lot. Sometimes when I'm preparing to hustle at Ebute Metta, the Pastors would ensure I go to church. From church to training. I was like someone whom they used Security men to be in the coaching job. All glory goes to God and MFM for the impact they made in my coaching career. The most challenging team I have managed is Heartland Football Club. Anybody who survives managing Heartland is going to be a great coach. I have managed so many good players like Chijioke Akuneto, Stephen Odey, Mohammed Zilkifilu, Austin Opara and Nenrot Silas.

Q: What brought about your mode of dressing and touchline swags in the NPFL? Would you have been a comedian, music star or entertainer? And who is your favourite Nigerian artist?

Ilechukwu: When are look at how Europe coaches dress, I said to myself we can do better. Even in hot weather it is good to wear good suite. By the time you snap picture that's what will show. It's good to dress well. This gives you confidence on the touchline. You must be simple, jovial and funny. A coach should be someone who the player can relate with. I love to make people around me happy. People should be happy whenever they see you. I love Olamide and don't joke with my dancing routine.

Q: Do you desire to manage the Super Eagles in future Who is your role model as a coach?

Ilechukwu: Managing Super Eagles is the dream of any coach in Nigeria. I wish with time that dream becomes a reality. It will be the best career move for my as a coach. But there is no pressure to be the Manager of Super Eagles in future. It's all about time. My role model is Jose Mourinho. He is someone I love with passion. I prepare very well to see Mourinho's games. He brings the best out of referees, fans and even the Media. His defensive pattern gives me goosebumps. Everyone wants to hear from him before and after any game. I also love Pep Guardiola's possessive pattern. The touchline reaction of Diego Simeone fascinates me too. I combine all these attributes to make everything fun.

Ottasolo Preseason Tourney: Oyedele inspires MFM to earn bragging rights against Remo Stars

Remo Stars was brought down to earth on Tuesday at the ongoing Ottasolo Pre-season tournament in Lagos after suffering a 1-0 defeat against MFM of Lagos.

Coming on the heels of their win at the just concluded Ogunjobi Gold Cup where the newly promoted side defeated Shooting Stars 4-0 in the final, Remo Stars was expected to give MFM a run for their money and the game really lived up to expectation.

Remo arrived Lagos with a changed team from the one that won in Ikenne, Ogun State, with the players showing that they have what it takes to be in the first team.

Adebayo Oyedele was the hero for the Olukoya Boys, scoring the only goal of the game in the 47th minute as MFM earned the South/West derby bragging rights.

Remo Stars goalkeeper, James Faith, had failed to get a grip on Mumuni Amoo’s shot, allowing Oyedele to put the ball at the back of the net.

The first opportunity of the game came the way of MFM as early as the 5th minute of the lively encounter, as James saved Dennis Obasi shot.

The Lagos-based side continued to pile on the pressure on their opponents but Remo Stars were also resolute.

Victor Osuagwu had the chance to put Remo Stars in front in the 23rd minute but failed to score as Onyeabuchi Ifeanyi intercepted the ball.

In the 35th minute, James Faith denied Dennis Obasi the chance to score with a fine save as the first half ended goalless.

MFM however took the lead in the second minute of the second half with Oyedele’s goal.

All efforts by Remo to get the equalizer was futile as the game ended 1-0.

Day 3 of the Ottasolo Pre-season tourney will see Ottasolo FC taking on Lobi Stars in the first game by 9am with 36 Lion playing against Yobo FC by 2pm. The final game of the day will be between Remo Stars and Smart City by 4pm.

All the games will take place at the Legacy Pitch, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

MFM FC, Lobi Stars record morale boosting victories on Day Two of Ottasolo Preseason Tourney

Surulere continued to be on the spotlight as the second day of the 2021 Ottasolo Pre Season Tournament took place on Tuesday at Legacy Pitch.

It was Lobi Stars of Makurdi who faced Yobo FC in an entertaining opening match of the day at 9am.

Both sides were hoping to bag a win in the keenly contested battle.

However, Yobo FC could not contain their fast-paced opponents as they succumbed to a 1-0 loss.

Lobi Stars rested most of their key players, yet they remained a threat.

Experienced striker Daniel Jackson climbed off the bench to nod home the winner with 12 minutes left on the clock.

The win for Pride of Benue over the NLO side in the tournament takes them to top of the Group A standings with three points from one game, while Ottasolo FC and 36 Lion share one point apiece.

In the second match, coach Gbenga Ogunbote led his Remo Stars' side in search of a win over MFM FC, yet they failed to hit the ground running.

In the 23rd minute, Victor Osuagwu had the chance to put Sky Blue Stars in front but he failed to score as Onyeabuchi Ifeanyi intercepted his effort.

Remo Stars custodian James Faith denied Dennis Obasi the chance to wreck the ship with a fine save.

Adebayo Oyedele eventually got onto the score sheet in the 47th minute as the game ended 1-0 in favour of the Olukoya Boys.

The loss leaves Ogunbote and his troops with no point in Group B. Sunshine Stars and MFM FC have three points each. Smart City are also pointless.

Meanwhile, the Remo Stars will now turn their focus to Smart City for their next clash on Wednesday whilst 36 Lion chase a win against Yobo FC on the same day.

Ottasolo FC will be out to dim Lobi Stars in a pulsating encounter at Legacy Pitch.

Ogunjobi Gold Cup: Remo Stars quenches MFM fire with slim win

Remo Stars claimed the bragging rights of the Southwest Derby at the Ogunjobi Gold Cup as they claimed a 1-0 victory over MFM FC on Sunday at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

Both teams gave their best with attacking play and defending in the first 45 minutes but at the end, the half ended in a barren draw.

The second half was a tough duel as both teams could have taken a point from the game but had their goalkeepers to thank for the saves they made.

With two minutes into the second stanza, the Sky Blues Stars captain Nduka Junior was an inspiration for his team, after he scored a free kick from the edge of MFM FC box.

As the clock thicker away the Olukoya Boys thought they had equalized in the 86th minute after an unmarked Oyedele Adebayo nodded the ball from a cross into the net.

His joy and that of his teammates was cut short after the referee ruled the goal as off-side as his assistant had raised the flag.

The Gbenga Ogunbote lads will now play FC Yobo in their final Group A game on Tuesday by 8am.

MFM goalie Adeniyi Bamidele teams up with Rangers

Nigeria Professional Football League giants Rangers have completed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Adeniyi Bamidele from MFM FC.

Bamidele penned a two-year deal with the club after successful negotiations.

The 29-year-old spent last season at MFM where he made 19 appearances and kept seven cleansheets.

He is expected to compete with Nana Bonsu, Femi Thomas and Mutawakilu Seidu for the number one shirt at Rangers.

Bamidele Adeniyi was one of the best goalkeepers in the Nigerian topflight last term.

His major strengths are diving and quick reflexes. He can rapidly adjust to deflections and short-range shots, and in particular, excels at stopping well-struck penalties.

The keeper oftentimes attempts to claim crosses very well and shows dominance in the air when called upon. In terms of command of area, Bamidele is quite competent. He is pretty vocal, enough to alert his defenders to danger and organise them accordingly. He rules his box often and makes sure that all the pieces are in place.

He lists 36 Lion, Crown FC and Wikki Tourists as his former clubs.

Oludayo Alabi solitary strike lifts MFM FC to first win at Ogunjobi Gold Cup

Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM FC) pipped FC Yobo 1-0 at the ongoing Ogunjobi Gold Cup Pre-Season Tournament in Ikene, courtesy of a second-half strike from Oludayo Alabi.

FC Yobo players had themselves to blame for not converting their clear cut chances in the first half and school defending in the second half, as they could have taken a point in the game.

Barely 11 minutes into the game Shedrach should have punished MFM FC for their sloppy defending, but he rather wasted Chukwuma Ugbo's brilliant pass as he blasted his effort wide.

The first half ended with both teams failing to find the back of the goal as the scoreline was 0-0.

MFM FC had goalkeeper Abayomi Folarin to thank in the 55th minute, as he made a double save from an effort from FC Yobo's Muyiwa Balogun.

The introduction of Alabi in the second half by Olukoya Boys coaching staff paid off as he added bites to their attack.

With less than 10 minutes into the game, precisely the 66th minute, Alabi used his pace and body size to drive past his marker to create ample space for himself close in FC Yobo box and curled his strike into the top left corner for his first goal of the tourney.

MFM FC will now clash with their south-west derby rivals Remo Stars on Matchday Two of the pre-season tournament while FC Yobo square up against Osun United on Sunday.

The country's first pre-Season tournament is sponsored by Optima Energy, and its proudly supported by Alansmith Nigeria Limited, Taiwo Joseph Ogunjobi Foundation, Nigeria leading sportswear firms, Owu, Haggai Sportswear, Afripro, Naija League Magazine, Matchroom, Sports, 11th Media Global Concept, Freestyle Sports, Renewed Hope, Kao Concept, Seyi Akinwunmi Charity Foundation, Dejavu Communication, Olansile Football Academy, TSI Football Academy and ITS Football Management.

Kwara United bounced back from their defeat in the first game to Shooting Stars, as they claimed a 1-0 win over Ijebu United.

A first half goal from Kabir Balogun in the 34th minute was enough to give Kwara United their first win of the tournament.

Sunshine Stars started their campaign on a winning note, after claiming a hard fought 1-0 win against Remo Stars.

First half ended without a goal after both teams missed several chances to score. Hadi Mohammed broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute after putting the ball past James Faith in goal.

Two second half goals from Ndubusi Pascal and Dennis Obasi ensured MFM FC get their first win of the tournament.

First half ended in stalemate, until Ndubusi Pascal benefited from a through pass to beat Shodipo Korede in goal. Dayo Alabi’s shot inside the area was saved by Korede before a rebound from Dennis Obasi made it 2-0 to the Olukoya boys.

Shooting Stars kickstart their title defense on a winning note with a 1-0 win over Kwara United. Both sides had their chances but failed to convert in the first 45 minutes.

Oluyole Warriors started strong in the second half and broke the dreadlock with a fine header from Malomo Ayodeji in the 47th minute.

An entertaining affair between Gateway United and Ijebu United in a local derby which produced three goals. Ijebu claimed a 2-1 win against Gateway with all the goals coming in the first half of the game.

Remo Stars cruised to a 2-0 win over Ottasolo FC. The sky blue stars started strong after hitting the post early in the game from a Dayo Ojo’s freekick.

Tolulope Ojo opened scoring with a well placed shot in the 70th minute after Qudus Akanni played a fine cross from the right. Seun Ogunribide sealed the win, after scoring a sumptuous freekick in the 90th minute.

It ended a stalemate between MFM FC and Niger Tornadoes in the last game of Matchday One. Niger Tornadoes almost claimed all three points in the final minutes of the game but a goal line clearance from Chinonso Michael ensured the match end in a draw.

POST-MATCH INTERVIEW:

Remo Stars coach, Gbenga Ogunbote spoke about the qualities of his team after their 2-0 win over Ottasolo FC.

“We have talented, quality, and young players, we are working to make a big statement in the season. We are a work in progress. The tournament has high quality and it offers a good opportunity to continue working with the team”.
