We remain committed to protection of Child Rights' - Kogi Government


The Kogi State Government has reiterated its resolve to continue to protect the rights of children in the state.


Governor Yahaya Bello gave the assurance during the inauguration of the 5th Kogi State Children's Parliament held at the Lugard House, Lokoja on Thursday.


The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Edward Onoja said that the state government has justified its commitment in this regard by ratifying, domesticating and implementing the Child Rights Law in the state.


The Governor noted that with this development, the rate of abuse being faced by innocent children on daily basis will be greatly reduced to its minimal level and vowed that justice would be served on the offenders of the law.



"Today's Epoch making event is another step taken by my administration towards giving golden voice to the voiceless children of Kogi State. As we all know, the Children's Parliament was a creation of the federal government in Nigeria aimed at enhancing Child's participation in governance.


"Since assumption of office, our administration has intensified efforts aimed at reviving all programmes particularly the one to guarantee the safety of lives and property of families living in Kogi State. Lot of resources both human and materials have been committed to making Kogi State safer and better for our children to live a promising and productive life" the Governor explained.


He stressed that any government that knows its onions should see children as leaders of both today and tomorrow and strive to ensure their empowerment by giving them sound training from the onset when they were born until they grow into leaders.


In her welcome address, the Kogi State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Fatima Buba said"As a custodian Ministry, we have a duty to help secure the future of our children. We owe them fidelity. We would not relent on our oars unless and until we have secured an enabling environment for their growth, survival, protection, participation and development.


"We shall work tirelessly with individuals, major stakeholders and credible NGOs to make Kogi uncomfortable for those involved in the business of kidnapping, sale, abuse and molestation of children" the ommissioner vowed.



She urged the parliamentarians not to disappoint the confidence reposed in them.


The Speaker of the Children's Parliament, Right Hon. Wisdom Amobeda in his inaugural speech, promised to synergy with the appropriate stakeholders like the Police, Army, NSCDC, Correctional Centres, Immigration, Custom, Office of the Governor, National Orientation Agency, relevant Ministries and host of others to ensure the popularization of the child rights law in Kogi.


He commended the state governor, Yahaya Bello for his Commitment to the well-being of Kogi women, youths and children.


He appealed to the state government to as a matter of importance to assist the parliament with mini bus and monthly or quarterly subvention to enable it function effectively.

FRSC launches ember months' campaign in Kogi, tasks motorists on road safety

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), RS8.3 Kogi State Sector Command, on Wednesday launched the 2021 Ember Months Campaign Rally, tagged: ''Maintain Safe Speed, Avoid Night Travels and Enjoy Quality Road Experience''.


Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi, who inaugurated the campaign at Lokoja Mega Terminal Felele,  urged motorists to always maintain safe speed and obey traffic rules and regulations. 


Represented by his Deputy, Dr Edward Onoja, the governor commended the efforts of FRSC for ensuring safety on Nigerian roads particularly in Kogi. 


According to him, the mandate of the FRSC is to ensure there are no accident on our way during this particular period when most people would want to embark on journey towards the end of the year.



He applauded FRSC for taking a proactive step through the advocacy which had gone a long way in reducing road accidents in the state.


The governor enjoined motorists and other road users to maintain safe speed, avoid night travels and enjoy quality road experience by not overtaking unnecessarily.


He used the opportunity to appeal to the general public particularly the transport unions to corporate and support government to ensure that the Lokoja Mega Terminal in Felele function effectively for the benefit of all.


Earlier, the FRSC Sector Commander in Kogi, CC Solomon Agure, said that the 2021 ember campaign was targeted at introducing the best global road use practices into the people of the state and the nation at large.


He explained that the essence of the FRSC ember months was to always educate motorists on how to safely use the road and prevent unnecessary crashes.


According to Agure, the four months of extensive public education this year is expected to produce zero crashes or zero death within the period and beyond. We are going to carry out enforcement on all traffic rules and regulations within this period.



The sector commander stressed that the Kogi FRSC, had put some measures in place to checkmate the ugly trend of overspeeding, dangerous driving and other road vices which often resulted in road traffic crashes.


''Road safety is a collective responsibility and to enjoy quality road experience, we must shun all forms of anti-safety vices relating to lawless, reckless, negligent, impatient, drunk and unskilled driving, among others'', he said.


He, therefore urged all transport stakeholders and Government officials to shun reckless driving and also ensure that their drivers and vehicles were in good mood and working conditions.


He thanked the traditional rulers, and sister security agencies in the state for their complementary roles towards achieving one common goal of nation building through safety on Nigeria's roads. 


Agure appreciated Kogi State Government for being very supportive and creating conducive environment towards the propagation of road safety in the state and the nation at large.



''Your Excellency, the Corps will continue to rely on your financial and logistics support in prosecuting our strategic goals of creating safer monitoring environment to achieve 15 and 20 per cent reduction in RTC and facility respectively'', Agure said. 


On his part, Alh. Yahaya Ibrahim, the Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), appreciated the FRSC for their support and proactiveness in ensuring road safety. 


''We are ever ready to support the Corps and State Government to ensure that the Lokoja Mega Terminal in Felele, is very effective and functional'', he said.
