"We officially kick-started the program on June 17 with an outreach to the Adankolo community. We provided education, checked vitals, and dispensed medications to indigent members of the community.

"This was made possible as a result of the support from our generous sponsors. The management supported us every step of the way, emphasising the importance of this initiative.

Ayodele Psychotherapy Hospital Holds First Session as CEO Tasks People On Lifestyle Behaviours

Foremost herbal psychotherapist, Dr. Isaac Ayodele has warned people to be mindful of what they eat, as some foods rather kill than heal.

Dr Ayodele who was speaking during an interactive session with his patrons recently, also urged all health-conscious people to toe the line of the forefathers of medicine who made food their medicine and medicine their food.

He also stated that one’s state of health depended on the category of food they consume. “If you consume unhealthy foods that kill,” he asserted, “you will surely shorten your life and destiny.

“It is very unfortunate that a lot of people, who should enjoy their lives today, are patients at nursing homes. Their children wish such parents were dead not because they hate them, but because they have become liabilities to the children and people around them. They eat foods that kill under the guise of enjoyment. To enjoy is not bad though, but pleasure is better and rewarding in moderation.”

The public health expert also revealed that festive periods are the time people abuse food mostly, advising people to avoid over-indulging in merriments at the expense of their health.

“It is true that food has become a universal tool of diplomacy to bring people of diverse cultures together. So, food have a lot of merits that cannot be wished away in a hurry. However, food and drinks keep bringing sorrows to many homes.

“If you cannot keep to the rule of moderation, and you eat both healthy and foods and drinks that kill, make sure you engage in my Food and Lifestyle menu to reverse the ailments that accompany your unhealthy foods and drinks.

“If, however, your challenge is eating disorder, psychological, emotional, addiction and other habits defiling your good personality, seek help.”

On the focus of his new programme, he said a lot of people misconstrue herbal practitioners as herbalists. According to him, many people perceive herbalists as people who peddle some concoctions and herbs in the streets propagating a thousand and one things that the concoctions could cure.

“We don’t only deal with the physical health challenges. We provide solutions to ailments from neck up and from neck down. Indeed, most of the modern-day ailments which medical laboratories can diagnose did not originate from the body. The roots of most diseases are behavioural and self-inflicted. The worst disease are the ailments emanating from the brain, as well as from the heart, emotions and the mind.

“Hence food, drinks and inordinate, defiling lifestyles are the bane of the modern debilitating ailments,” he declared.

He added that for holistic health to take place, one must put into consideration the mind, heart, body and the various organs altogether. “Suicidal thoughts, depression, bipolar, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, attention deficit hyperactivity, eating disorders, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder as well as addiction and substance abuse have rendered many people’s lives miserable than most medical conditions that we dread.”

According to him, his mode of practice stands out his organization in the medical space. “We diagnose ailments from the mind and the body from our psychometric laboratory, we do psychosocial prescribing, and use herbal and integrative complementary and alternative therapies to treat the people and reverse them to their original good person from the bad and the ugly they have become.

“Indeed, herbal psychotherapy is an emerging field known as the Principles of Herbal Psychotherapy 101,” he said.

Sedentary lifestyle is also a disease according to the expert. “It creeps in little by little until all you love to do is to sit down and hate standing and walking like a plague. The situation gets very ugly to the extent that you feel like engaging people to do every chore for you. You feel like sleeping endlessly or at least lying down,” he revealed. This can aggravate to acute and chronic diseases, like high blood pressure, stroke, eating disorder, obesity, kidney and liver disease and high insulin resistance, which is the problem of diabetes.

“The list is endless including, low libido, prostate disease, partial or total memory lost and blindness. Never ignore your daily movements. Engage in any exercise that you love, be it aerobics, swimming, sports, or just brisk or lethargic walk. For a minimum of 30 minutes.”

The online interaction with potential patrons of Ayodele Herbal Psychotherapy Hospital is a regular event on Zoom.

DOVE-HAVEN FOUNDATION TAKES THE LEAD IN CLOSING ''CANCER CARE GAP'' AMONG THE RURAL POPULACE IN NIGERIA

Cancer remains a major cause of death worldwide with increasing rate of mortality yearly. Its burden has been so overwhelming and forms a big threat to both the rich and poor.

The World Cancer Day is celebrated every February 4, aims to prevent millions of deaths each year by raising awareness and education about cancer and pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action against the disease.

Dove-Haven Foundation, a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization located in Isanlu, Kogi State, joined her local and international counterparts to celebrate the 2022 World Cancer Day.

As part of the objectives of the organization to eliminate cancer threat with high focus on rural areas, the DHF organised a symposium, titled: "Closing the Cancer Care Gap Among The Rural Populace In Nigeria", as part of activities to mark the ''World Cancer Day'' 2022.

In his remarks, the DHF Executive Director, Dr. Ekundayo Samuel, described the scourge of cancer faced by the rural populace and how there is a major care gap, as most of the advocacy efforts are focused in urban areas.

Samuel noted that closing the cancer care gap require proper evaluation of the epidemiology of cancer, saying its inaccurate statistics in Nigeria would be a limiting factor to closing the gaps.

He enjoined governments and all relevant stakeholders to work hard to present the real cancer data in the country.

According to him, the data would help in proper planning and implementation of other strategies that focused on closing the care gap.

Dr Samuel further advised that more cancer intervention centres should be situated in the underserved rural communities where the scourge is causing havoc.

Speaking, Dr Abubakar Bello, the immediate past President, African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), said, “being human is a major risk factor to cancer”.

Bello highlighted four major pillars of cancer care as; prevent all preventable cancer, treat all treatable cancer, cure all curable cancer, and palliate cancers that need palliation.

He said that the inability to institutionalised national vaccination and screening programmes for cancers such as cervical and prostate cancers remained the major gaps.

According to Bello, with about 86 per cent of pati

ents present late and low capacity for diagnosis and treatment, the gaps keep widening.

He explained that about 250 radiotherapy machines were needed for the Nigerian population estimated at 250million, but yet there are less than 10 in the country.

Dr Bello advocated that government should enact policies that will enable the private sectors to thrive such as tax relief; grants and partnerships; increase oncologists training; and create an enabling work environment to reduce brain drain.

On his parts, Dr Adamu Umar, the President of the Nigerian Cancer Society (NSC), said the cancer care funds from the government should be properly utilized and bureaucracy removed.

Dr Umar added that NAFDAC should speed up the process of approving application for the importation of HPV vaccine which could help to prevent over 90 per cent of cervical cancer.

He reiterated the need to adopt a multidisciplinary and holistic approach in order to close cancer care gap involving the governments, private sectors, NGOs, individuals and other relevant stakeholders.

Also speaking, Dr. Omolola Salako, the CEO, Oncopadi Technologies Limited, said low number of oncologists remains one of the major cancer care gaps in Nigeria,

According to her, it is so sad that Nigeria has only 81 clinical and radiation oncologists distributed in 18 states; suboptimal care due to inadequate resources; high cost of care which comes mainly from out-of-pocket.

Dr. Okpakpo Okpikpi, the National Coordinator, National Cancer Control Programme, Federal Ministry of Health, said the federal government was already considering intervention fund for eight additional health centers for cancer across the country to support care.

Okpikpi, who was represented by Dr Uche Nwokwu from the ministry, said the target would be that, ''no patient will need to travel 100 kilometers before accessing a cancer care centre''.

Mrs. Moji Animashaun, Executive Director, St Cyril Cancer Treatment Foundation, said closing the time between awareness creation and screening, screening and diagnosis, diagnosis and treatment are critical in cancer care advocacy.

On her parts, Dr. Foluke Sarimiye, the Founder, Patella Care Foundation, said closing the care gap would take a multidisciplinary approach.

She urged the government to embark on training and retraining of oncologists, while she emphasised the need to encourage medical students to go into the oncology specialty.

A Survivor of cancer, Mrs. Janet Adetoro, stressed the need to actively involve patients in the disease management.

Adetoro, who is a retired Director, Nursing Services and Administrator, urged cancer patients to always seek for help from the appropriate place.

She further advised patients to comply with treatment regimens and not be religious about this deadly disease.

Dr. Ishak Lawal a Technical Expert of DHF, said radiotherapy machines and other resources should be deployed to rural communities for easy access.

Dr. Lawal also advocated that direct non-medical care or support should be considered in closing the care gap.

Summarily, the stakeholders in their separate remarks, all admitted that government alone cannot close the cancer care gaps, and called for joint action to reduce cancer scourge in Nigeria and globally.

They called for advocacy efforts and awareness creation from primary to tertiary institutions, adding that information should be made available especially at the grassroots.

The stakeholders commended the DHF for its awareness and cancer care initiatives which are important to bridging the cancer care gaps.

NGO Educates Transport Workers On Cancer Control, Prevention

By Stephen Adeleye

An NGO, the Dove-Haven Foundation (DHF), on Monday sensitised transportation workers and other relevant stakeholders on their roles in the prevention and control of cancer.

The DHF is a non-profitable, non-political, and a non-governmental organisation (NGO) focusing on rural community cancer campaign, located in Isanlu, Yagba East Local Government Area (LGA), Kogi State, Nigeria,

Speaking at the event in Isanlu, the DHF's Executive Director, Dr Ekundayo Samuel, said the event was organised in pursuit of the organisation’s aim of reducing cancer threats and in the spirit of giving back to the society,

He said the event, tagged: ''The Role of Transportation Workers in Cancer Control'', was to enlightened transportation workers on their role in cancer control and how they can join in the fight against cancer.

''We believe in inclusion because that is the best and quickest way to overcome the plague called cancer. Everybody needs to be involved".

''So, we have put in place today’s event to look at the role of transportation workers in cancer control, and over 90 participants would participate in the event,'' he said.

Dr Samuel, who was represented by Mrs. Eunice Olure, a Community Health and Extension Worker of DHF, appreciated all the dignitaries and participants for the turnout.

He noted that the organisation’s vision was to see a world without cancer threats, saying the lined up activities for the day would allow the participants to play their part in cancer control.

According to him, the continuous rise in the incidence of cancer burden in Nigeria, Africa, and globally is of great concern.

Dr Samuel emphasised that it had been projected according to global cancer statistics (GLOBOCAN) that by the year 2030, about 30 million people will be living with cancer.

He added that the projection also showed that one in two persons would have one form of cancer or another by 2030 if nothing was done.

He stressed that Nigeria had an estimated 100,000 new cases of cancer in 2020 as reported by GLOBOCAN.

The Guest Speakers present at the event were; Dr. Nasir Abdullah, Medical Officer-in-Charge, General Hospital, Isanlu; and Mrs. Emily G. Baba, Family Planning Lead, Yagba East LGA, Kogi state.

Dr Nasir Abdullah, who spoke on “Cancer And Its Causes”, said that cancer always resulted from the inappropriate, abnormal, and excessive procreation of cells.

According to Abdullah, cancer can affect any part of the body but mostly affects five body part such as the breast, lungs, prostate, cervix, and intestine; and does not discriminate based on age, status, race, or colour.

He added that notable signs and symptoms of cancer included: difficulty in urination and excretion, inappropriate blood discharge in orifices, growth in the breast or any part of the body, indigestion, persistent cough, vocal irritation, among others.

He emphasised the need for early presentation for screening and stern carefulness of lifestyle.

On her part, Mrs Emily Baba, who spoke on “Cancer Control and the Role of the Transport Workers in Preventing the Spread of Cancer”, said that exhausts from mechanical machines like motorcycles, tricycles, and cars were the major triggers of cancer formation.

She urged the people to be conscious and more sensitive to changes in their body, and to regularly consult medical personnel for necessary advice and screening if necessary.

She said that the best cure for cancer was prevention, saying Cancers detected at their early stages could still be effectively managed.
