A chieftain of the All Progressives
Congress in Kogi State, Dr. Yakubu Ugwolawo, has asked indigenes of the
state not to vote based on tribal sentiments ahead of the November 21
governorship election in the state.
Ugbolawo urged them to elect competent
leaders.
The party chieftain spoke in Ugbolawo,
in the Ofu Local Government Area of the state, during a campaign by a
governorship aspirant of the party, Yahaya Bello.
This was contained in a statement issued
on Thursday.
Addressing the party leaders and
delegates at the APC secretariat, the chieftain said that as an Igala
man, he believed that tribal difference should not influence people’s
choices at the poll.
He said, “In the last 16 years of
democratic rule in the state, Igala people have not witnessed meaningful
development. The Igala district is facing developmental challenges and
if the area is blindfolded with ethnic sentiments, there will be no
meaningful development.”
He noted that despite the fact that many
Igala aspirants were jostling for the governorship primary, he and other
leaders have thrown their weight behind Bello because he is competent.
In his speech, Bello said his ambition
was motivated by the need to ensure that Kogi State witness
transformation.
The governorship aspirant said since the
creation of Kogi State in 1991, the state has not gotten it right in
terms of infrastructural development, education, health and socio-
economic development.
He said, “We the youths are strong
believers of change in Kogi State. Things are terribly bad that you
cannot compare the Kogi State capital with any others in Nigeria. The
roads are terrible. We believe that the opportunity has come to get it
right now by bringing the young generation to governance.”
