Governor Sanwo-Olu says Lagos cherishes right to host Aisha Buhari Cup, promises fabulous tournament

The Government of Lagos State is delighted that the ‘Centre of Excellence’ was chosen to host the inaugural edition of the Aisha Buhari Invitational Women’s Tournament and will leave no stone unturned to stage a tournament for the beautiful side of memories, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu assured on Friday.

Speaking when Members of the Local Organizing Committee of the tournament led by NFF 1st Vice President/Chairman of Lagos State FA, Barr. Seyi Akinwunmi paid him a courtesy visit at the State House, Marina, Sanwo-Olu did nothing to hide his enthuasiasm, and confessed a deepening love for football and especially the women’s game.

“Football is one of the lead factors that bridge the gap and bring communities closer together and is enabling a more exciting world. The women’s game has continued to pull its weight and can be said to be presently at par with the men’s game in the euphoria that it generates, and the sheer class, stamina, excellence and expertise that the players put on display.

“Lagos State, the State of aquatic splendour, is delighted to be named as host of this very important invitational tournament. We will aim to not only host a tournament befitting of the name and positive values that Her Excellency projects and promotes, but also want to showcase our State and the country at large through an efficient and effective organization that will be talked about for a long time.”

While heaping encomiums on President of Nigeria Football Federation and FIFA Council Member, Mr Amaju Melvin Pinnick for being “highly dedicated and passionate about the sport, and a man who always believes and works hard to make things happen,” Sanwo-Olu recalled the role Lagos State Government played in the Super Eagles travelling by waterways to the 2021 AFCON qualifying match against Benin Republic in Cotonou in March this year, and stated that the exercise has already produced direct spin-offs.

“We have signed contracts to build nine

mini-stadia across the State and these will be of immense value to the youth of this country who are highly talented but only need infrastructure to nurture to world standard.”

Insisting that the ongoing renovation work at the Teslim Balogun Stadium will make the facility the best in the country, Sanwo-Olu said Lagos will be ready and proud to host First Lady, Dr (Mrs) Aisha Buhari during the tournament, and assured that the tenacious football fans in Lagos will add much colour to the week-long tournament.

“The opportunities available in football are boundless, so we will commit to delivering a successful and model event that will spur us to encourage and support women’s football in our institutions of learning in Lagos State.”

Speaking earlier, Mr. Pinnick informed Governor Sanwo-Olu that the LOC members were A-list individuals carefully drawn from the football, business and political spheres, and are already aligned to the fact that the Aisha Buhari Invitational Tournament must meet the best

standards possible anywhere, and has to leave worthy legacies that will reflect brilliantly on Nigeria’s image in the universe.

“I want to specially thank Governor Sanwo-Olu for the role has played in supporting the Super Eagles and other National Teams, but let me say here that the month of September is a loaded one. The Super Eagles will kick off their 2022 World Cup qualifying race against Liberia in Lagos on 3rd September, and then fly from here to play Cape Verde away. The Aisha Buhari Cup is a very big project, because nothing must go wrong. We want to do it so well that subsequent editions will have a template to fall back on.”

Chairman of the LOC, Barr. Akinwunmi praised Sanwo-Olu for his tremendous support and encouragement of football in Lagos State and nationally, and pledged that the committee will organize a tournament worthy of the name of the First Lady and which honours the Centre of Excellence.

In her vote of thanks, the Director of Organization, Aisha Falode said hosting the tournament is a big opportunity for Nigeria to make a statement, and that the entire LOC membership was attuned to the vision of using the tournament to engender new, positive narratives about Lagos State (the cradle of women’s football in Nigeria) and the Nigeria nation.

Avoid sex before sporting activities, medical expert charges athletes

A medical practitioner and a former Footballer at the University of Ibadan, Dr Adedamola Mosuro has advised sportsmen and women to avoid sexual intercourse before their game.

Dr.Adedamola Mosuro who is a Family Physician and Owner of Feathers Medical Clinic, Ophthalmologist FWACS (Ophth), Saskatchewan, Canada, spoke as a Guest of the Ex- University of Ibadan Footballers Association virtual platform at the weekend, said sex

carried within the period of an activity that requires physical exertion and concentration, might not be advised as it has the tendency to drains  energy, and could slow down ones performance.

The medical expert who was popularly known as Sparrow  during his football playing days in the University, however said sexual activity, well timed, is not contraindicated, and in can be advised by some experts.

He insisted that proper lifestyle is advised for optimal performance of every sportsman and woman.

On ensuring general well-being of athletes, Dr Mosuro said "It's tough advising authorities in general if there is no initiative to cater for the well-being of athletes. All sports administrators always want the best from athletes, no matter the consequence" .

Continuing, he said "In an ideal world, having a physiotherapist, a physician, a nurse, a massage therapist will be the starting point. It would also help if they know what to do in the setting of an emergency. A physician with training in sports medicine will be ideal".

"Having a functioning AED on standby would also save lives if there is a cardiac arrest, as we saw at the Europe recently " he concluded.

Medical expert advocates CPR training for athletes

As the Tokyo 2020 is about to begin, a medical expert Dr Adedamola Mosuro has advocated for an immediate chest compression training for all participants in the games.

Dr Mosuro who was the Guest of the Ex-University of Ibadan Footballers Association virtual interactive program at the weekend said the training is very important for everyone, and every sportsman and woman should be able to carry it out.

Quoting his words, the medical expert said "Everyone should register for a basic life support course and learn how to do CPR. It's nothing fancy. This basic support is what they did to Erikson on the field recently. Anyone can do it, anyone can have what Erikson had on any field. Considering, how fit Erikson was as a professional player, he still had heart attack. If nothing was done when they were done, and the way they were done, the guy would have died. So, knowing basic life support is very crucial, not just you, the children as well. It should be made compulsory for everyone participating in sports.

"The children at home, should be able to administer it. They can be a life saver at any point in time . They should be well trained on it, so that they can do chest compression immediately and rescue the life of the affected person. If you have something choking your throat, they can do a manouvre to bring out those things. Don't think it's only a doctor that can do this. You are the first treatment. Amaju Pinnick sees positives from Super Eagles defeat to Mexico

The NFF President and as well  Fifa Council member Amaju Pinnick have reacted immediately after the Nigeria match versus Mexico that ended 4 - 0 in favour of Mexico

The NFF supremo revealed that, he is not disappointed by the result rather, he's more impressed by the performance of the boys as there are many positives to take from the match

While reacting to the loss, Pinnick said:

"I am not disappointed at all with the result, rather I am more impressed by the dexterity of the boys, their resilience and the 'never say die' spirit of the Nigeria displayed by the boys.

"the stringing of their passes were sublime, exuded an appreciable level of confidence and that is the positives from the match. He posited.

"The exposure the boys got from a match of that magnitude cannot be undermined.

The stadium was 90% filled by the Mexicans and this is the first time the boys will be playing a high profile match like that and irrespective of the result. Inspite of the fact that the Mexican team is ranked 11th in the World , time difference and the Super Eagles just trained twice and playing together for the first time, they held their own and made us proud  , they were able to play good football."

The astute sports administrator continued by assuring Nigerians that the boys will be given more friendly matches in the nearest future.

"The boys will play more friendly matches by October, to give them more exposure, by then their confidence level will be higher and they will be able to know what it takes to play high profile matches like that. We are not going to dissolve the team, the boys will be kept together and I'm waiting for the technical report from the technical team and from there we take it further."

"The Essence of this match is to give the home based players exposure and I want to reiterate that the NPFL teams are not bad with the level they played against the Mexicans, the Mexicans Captain plays in Athletico Madrid, they have player from Napoli and other top teams in the world and they are CONCACAF defending champions preparing to play another tournament. Our boys were assembled in two weeks and they were able to hold their own on the pitch against Mexico, we must commend them and give them credit for what they've done."

"I got calls from colleagues from different part of the world commending the boys asking if they are my Team A. I told them they are home based players and praises were showered on them. This is an affirmation to how well they played."

"This is not time to condemn the team but to support these boys and give them more exposures. One to three of these boys will make it to the Super Eagles in the nearest future."

The FIFA Council member also shed more light on the Female team, the Super Falcons.

"The Super Falcons will be camping in Austria for 10 Days, and return to partake in the Aisha Buhari Invitational Tournament. This is because continuity speaks volume. They will be going back to the US to play more friendly matches. Part of our clear mandate is to give the National team quality friendlies and we will not stop doing so."

"I want to use this medium to thank the Ministry who gave the support, the club owners who allowed their players to be part of this friendly and as well the LMC who oversees the league. Everyone of them played  a pivotal role to ensure the success of this friendly and we will not be discouraged by side comments but rather we will keep doing the needful."

"to me, many positives must be taken from this friendly" Amaju concluded.
