Akinkunmi Amoo Bags MOTM, player of the week awards after excellent display against Goteborg

Former U-17 attacking midfielder Akinkunmi Amoo, has been rewarded for his fantastic display on match day 20 of the Swedish Allsvenkan, after being named player of the week, in the match against Goteborg on Thursday night. 

The 19-year-old was in a league of his own, producing series of fine display for the host as he scored once and assisted another to help  his side secure a vital  3-0 win over Goteborg; a performance which caught the eyes of series of renowned media outlets in Sweden and Europe at large.

 

According to Sweden based media outfit Discovery+ Sport, the performance of the 19-year-old was enough to name him the best player, as his all round display was a joy to watch.

 

“After being outside of the starting eleven for a period, Amoo is back with a message against IFK Goteborg. It was a goal, an assist and there were other contributions. For the fine and match-deciding effort, the Hammarby player is the player of the round" says Discovery + Sport.

The former Golden Eaglet man,on Thursday night, put Hammarby ahead after just six minutes before setting up Aziz Ouattara for the second goal and just before the half time with Vladimir Rodic, sealing the win with a fine finish twenty minutes from time. 

Amoo 19, is now Hammarby second top scorer in the league in this campaign with 6 goals, two behind striker Gustav Ludwigson- with the Nigerian also registering 3 assist to take his goals involvement to 9 thus far in the ongoing season.

Governing Council approves promotion of five Kogi Poly Chief Lecturers, demotes one

... MAKES HISTORIC VISIT TO ITAKPE CAMPUS

The Governing Council of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja has approved the promotion of Five (5) Principal Lecturers to the rank of Chief Lecturers just as it approved demotion of one from Chief Lecturer to Principal Lecturer over gross misconduct. 

This was part of the far reaching decisions made at the 64th Regular Meeting of the Governing Council led by the chairman, Professor Isa Yakubu held on Tuesday, 21st of September, 2021 at the Polytechnic's Council Chamber.

Having considered the recommendations from the Appointments, Promotions and Disciplinary Committee (AP&DC), Council approved the promotion of Olorunniyi Adebola Emmanuel and Ahmed Onimisi Matthew (both of the Department of Sciences, School of Preliminary Studies), Omolegbe Leah Tinuola (Department of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Preliminary Studies), Zubair Ajoze Abdulraheem ( Computer Science Department) and Audu Ozohu Omolola Muhammed ( Department of Library and Information Science) to the rank of Chief Lecturer.

Council also approved the recommendation that Mr. John Edoka, a Chief Lecturer in the Department of Public Administration be demoted to the rank of Principal Lecturer to serve as deterrent to others for his involvement in act of gross misconduct bordering on dishonesty, student victimisation and disobedience to lawful order.

In the same vain, the appointment of Mr. Dominic O. Idakwo, a Lecturer II from the Department of Science and Laboratory Technology (SLT) was terminated for abscondment from duty since 2018 after he was granted study leave with pay.   

Council further resolved that, Mr. Oguntunyi Oluwaseun, a Computer Technician in the Information Technology and Resource Centre (ITRC) be made to pay for the six missing laptops under his care. 

Council also resolved that Mr. Olufemi Anthony Ajibodun of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, be made to refund  the sum of  Two Million, Six hundred and nineteen thousand, nine hundred and thirty six naira, fifteen kobo only  (N2,619,936,15)  he collected as part of  TETFUND scholarship grant for "up -keep" at the University of Central Lancashire, United Kingdom in 2012 which he did not attend.

Earlier in the day, the Governing Council made history with oversight visit to the Itakpe Campus of the Polytechnic which is the first of its kind in the history of the institution. 

Led by the Chairman, Professor Isa Yakubu, Council inspected facilities at the three Schools of Engineering, Agricultural Technology and Preliminary Studies on the campus, and expressed satisfaction with the level of development there.

Professor Yakubu who stressed the need for vocational and technical studies to be given more priorities due to its relevance to societal needs, commended the Rector, Dr. Salisu Ogbo Usman for his commitment to the growth of the campus. 

The Dean, School of Engineering, Dr. Stephen Akande thanked the Governing Council and the Polytechnic Management for the historic  visit, just as he pleaded that the campus be fenced to forestall security challenges. 

Professor Isa Yakubu while thanking the Council Members for their support and commitment in the quest to make Kogi State Polytechnic a positive reference for other institutions, said Council would continue to provide needed support to management of the institution to achieve their set goals.

Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Salisu Ogbo Usman praised His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello for providing the enabling environment and his continued support to matters concerning education especially Kogi State Polytechnic.

Dr. Usman equally thanked the Chairman and members of the Governing Council for their leadership roles and encouragement to the Management in repositioning the Polytechnic in good stead.

Ex-Flying Eagles wing wizard Ahmad Ghali aims positive league result with AS Trencin

Former Flying Eagles and AS Trencin explosive winger, Ahmad Ghali has revealed his readiness for the next Slovak Super Liga challenge, against FK Pohronie coming up later today, at the Futbalovy Stadion Ziar nad Hronom.

AS Trencin manager, Peter Hlinka, has included Ghali in today's squad for the Matchday Nine of the ongoing Slovakian Super Liga, against bottom-placed team, Pohronie.

Speaking ahead of the game which he described as a difficult game, the 21-year-old attacker said that he is ready to help his team overcome Pohronie, who he believes can be dangerous on their days.

“ Today's  game against Pohronie will be difficult game in their Stadium, even though they are in the last position but they are good opponents both defensively and offensively.

“As a team, we have really worked hard this week to be ready for the game and we are ready to give everything today and win the game.”

Akinkunmi Amoo's screamer inspires Hammerby to victory over Goteborg in Sweden

Nigerian attacker Akinkumi Amoo continued his superb form from the midfield for Swedish side, Hammarby IF,  as he scored and set up another, to  lead them to a one-sided 3-0 win over IFK Goteborg.

 

Still raving from his match winning performance four days ago, the 19-year-old kept his place in the starting XI , as Head Coach, Milos Milojevic made a host of changes for the hosts as he pushed Amoo further up to support the attackers.

 

The former golden Eaglet star man, needed just six minutes to hit the ball running as he put the hosts ahead with a ferocious strike hitting the ball beyond the goalkeeper, from 30 yards out to make it 1-0; although,  it was much to the  Joy of the player and the home fans.

 

Amoo almost made it 2-0 ten minutes later, as the player exchanged passes with Aziz before he then set up Gustav Ludwigson- who failed to keep his cool while firing straight at the goalkeeper with the goal post at his mercy.

 

The visitors however, had chances of their own at the other end but the host goalkeeper stood his ground before the impressive Amoo had yet another effort saved by the visitor’s goalkeeper on 23 minutes.

 

With half time whistle just minutes away, the hosts doubled their lead with a goal made in Africa as the most efficient Amoo delivered a perfect cross into the part of Ivorian Aziz Mohammed, who redeemed himself in the second time of asking to make it 2-0.

 

Amoo was then involved again two minutes after the break as the fleet footed midfielder, danced his way past several Goteborg players before his fierce shot from the edge of the box rattled the woodwork.

 

The hosts also went on to claim their 3rd goal twenty minutes from time when a moment of magic from Vladimir Rodic, who tipped the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 3-0  which brought moments of exhilaration to Amoo and his teammates.

 

The Nigerian was  substituted to a sounding ovation- twelve minutes before the end of 90 minutes; as Hammarby claimed their 9th win of the campaign, to move up 33 points, just 5 points behind 3rd place Malmo in the race for European places.

 

Amoo who was deservedly named the man of the match, and has now taken his goals involvement to 9 in the league (6 goals, 3 assists), having just started 13 of the 19 games he has featured in.

Dapo Abiodun Pre-season Tourney comes with freshness, gets date for 2021 edition

 

The organizers of the Dapo Abiodun Pre-season Tournament have released this year’s edition calendar. The prestigious pre-season tournament will hold from 12-21 October, 2021 in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

This is the third edition of the pre-season tournament designed to help top clubs in Nigeria prepare for the new season. Shooting Stars have won the previous two editions of the tournament.

Tournament Coordinator Oye Bawala has disclosed that 16 clubs will participate in this year’s edition. Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode has been the traditional venue for the tournament and it will host 10 NPFL and six NNL clubs next month.

“We have grown from the first edition and we are excited to host the third edition next month. We are happy for the clubs that participated last year for achieving success. The Cup champions, Shooting Stars sealed an NPFL ticket while Rivers United finished with a CAF Champions League ticket. The benefits for all the clubs that participated were huge and the tournament had positive impact.”

Akinkunmi Amoo promised Hammarby more headed goals, set sights on Goteborg clash

Former Golden Eaglet winger Akinkunmi Amoo has revealed that he is not a player shy of scoring with his head after his lone strike earned his Hammarby IF side, secured a hard fought 1-0 victory over Varbergs, on Monday night.

The 19-year-old headed home from a Astri Slimani cross, despite not been the tallest in the field with the attacker showing great skills and composure to score what proved to be his 5th league goal, of the campaign. 

Speaking to the club media after the match,  heroic Akinkunmi Amoo, expressed confidence in his ability to score more goals with his head; But laughed off suggestions that,  his height could limit him to score more goals with his feat, than his head. 

“If you watch the game from the beginning, I headed a lot of balls, so it doesn't mean when you are short you can’t head ball accurately. I timed balls well against Varbergs and went for it,” Amoo added. 

The tricky winger went on to praise his side spirited efforts in the game whilst also hailing his coaches for their doggedness.  

“Physical game, pretty tough for us. Team spirit was excellent and we kept the lead Confidently. I appreciate my teammates and the technical staff for this crucial goal; even though, it was built from our work in the training,” Amoo concluded. 

As the Eagle is expected to file out on Thursday night when his side take to the field against IFK Goteborg on match day 20 of the Allsvenskan, Akinkunmi Amoo remains upbeat in grinding out victory as well.

National Library Intensifies Campaign On Reading Culture In Kogi

The National Library of Nigeria (NLN), has embarked on awareness campaign drive across the country with a call on school children and youths to have attitudinal change and imbibe reading culture.

The National Liberian/Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, made the call at the 2021 Readership Promotion Campaign, tagged: “Building A Nation Of Readers; Share Your Story”, on Tuesday in Lokoja.

Anunobi said the campaign was aimed at encouraging and reviving the moribund reading culture among Nigerians by promoting availability of good reading materials.

Anunobi, who was Represented by the Head Legal Deposit Department, NLN, Abuja, Mr Idongesit Akpabio, added that the campaign was also to collectively with other stakeholders seek solutions to address identified obstacles to reading habit in Nigeria.

“To achieve these over the years, the NLN has continued to embark on readership promotion campaigns focusing on children and youths in primary and secondary schools by sensitising, informing, and educating them on reading culture.

”The campaigns are also extended to some identified groups in the society, such as the expectant and nursing mothers in maternity homes, workers and travellers in motor parks, inmates in the Correctional centres and rural communities across the country”, he said.

The Head of Kogi Branch of NLN, Mrs Oyiza Agu, said the programme was initiated following the prevailing declination in reading culture in Nigeria,

She added the programme was an annual ritual aimed at promoting reading beyond mere utilization and examination reason.

According to her, it is to support the creation of model reading clubs in Nigeria and empower stakeholders to actively promote reading as well as make Nigeria a reading nation through partnership and collaborations.

“To build a nation of readers, we must share our story to tell people how we are able to succeed to top by reading.

”Like the adage says, a reader is a leader and anyone who reads will be enlightened and knowledgeable about happenings and current information in the society”, Agu said.

In his remarks, the Kogi Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Wemi Jones, stressed the need for children in both primary, secondary and tertiary institutions to embrace reading habit.

He stressed that reading culture remained the surest means of developing their knowledge for global information.

Jones, who was represented by a Director in the Ministry, Mr Augustine Omede, admonished the youths to shun much concentration on internet browsing that has less value on their educational attainment.

The commissioner reiterated government’s desire to continue to give education sector topmost priority.

The highlights of the event was a talk on the importance of Liberary/Reading, presented by the Head Kogi Branch of NLN, Agu, followed by the presentation of Certificate of Participation to the school children.

IFAD Team Commend Kogi Government For Sustaining Effective Implementation Of VCDP In Kogi

A team from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has commended Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi for the progress its agricultural Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP-AF) has recorded in its implementation in the state.

The IFAD-VCDP Country Programme Officer, Mrs Mariatu Kamara, gave the commendation when she led a team of delegation on the ''9th IFAD Mission Visit To Kogi State'', at Government House Lokoja on Wednesday.

Kamara noted that the IFAD-VCDP started in six States and because of its successes, the Federal Government requested that it be extended to three additional States which included Kogi based on the additional financing (AF).

She stressed that Kogi had recorded successes in terms of achieving the objective of VCDP, and was one of the first States to provide its counterpart funding at inception.

''However, we noticed that in 2021, we have not received any counterpart funding from Kogi. 

''We are drawing the attention of the state government to it, so as to ensure smooth execution of VCDP programmes in the state.

''We will like to continue to pledge our continued support particularly in the agricultural sector as we know Nigeria could actually become the food basket of West African if the sector is developed'', she said.

She aplauded the State Government for its support since its inclusion, and appealed for continued support for the benefit rural farmers especially women and youth.

She assured that the supervision visit would guide IFAD in trying to ensure that the project meets its development objectives.

''We look forward to proper supervision mission with recommendations that would advance the implementation of the VCDP programmes'', Kamara said. 

In his remarks, Gov. Yahaya Bello, aplauded the federal government and IFAD for including Kogi as one of the three new benefitting states in the country. 

Bello, who was represented by his Deputy, Edward Onoja, appealed to IFAD-VCDP team to add council to the five benefiting local government areas in the state. 

According to him, Lokoja, Ajaokuta, Olamaboro, Ibaji and Kabba-Bunu, are the only five Local Governments Areas currently benefiting in the IFAD-VCDP in the state.

He promised that Kogi would justify its inclusion, adding that the administration had carried out need assessment for the 21 LGAs of the state upon assumption of office.

He stressed that women and youths in rural areas had shown capacity to add value to agriculture to earn more income and turn around the state for the better. 

The governor thanked the team for their commitment and assured them of government's preparedness to give them the necessary support at all times.

He assured the team of adequate security during their visit, saying the administration had invested so much in the sector. 

Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr David Apeh, said the governor attached great priority to food security and poverty reduction in the state. 

Apeh said that within a relative short period of VCDP implementation in Kogi, a lot had been achieved to boost food security and enhance the social economics status of the rural farmers. 

The commissioner added that government through the IFAD-VCDP had provided farm inputs ranging from fertilizers, seeds and chemicals to over 800 rural farmers in the state.

In his vote of thanks, Dr Stella Adejoh, Kogi State Coordinator, IFAD-VCDP Programme, thanked the deputy governor for taking his time to receive the team, while appreciating the team for the choice of Kogi State.

She added that VCDP was achieving its mandate in Kogi; assisting rural farmers to enhance their capacity, income and ensure food security through production, processing and marketing. 

The team thereafter visited some of the FGN/IFAD-VCDP executed projects' in some locations in Lokoja.

 

The VCDP is a programme of Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) supported by IFAD assisted under United Nations (UN).

Flying Officers Cup 2021: Organisers reassure participants to deliver outstanding tournament

With less than three weeks to the beginning of the 2021 edition of the Flying Officers Cup, Organisers of the biggest Women Football Pre-season Competition in Africa have promised a thrilling Championship. 

Already, top teams in Nigeria and neighboring African countries have started preparation for the competition, which is billed to hold from the 10th to the 24th of October 2021 at the Area 10 Sports Complex, FCT, Abuja, with 16 teams contesting for the trophy, currently held by Bayelsa Queens.

Preparation for the tournament has reached a pivotal stage and General Coordinator of the Championship, Barrister Victoria Nlemigbo said everyone involved have been working relentlessly to deliver the biggest and best ever Pre-season Championship.

"We no doubt have an overwhelming desire to deliver the biggest and best ever women football Pre-season Championship and through our determination, plans and decisiveness, we will be able to achieve this vision. 

"We understand it takes a lot and we are working relentlessly and will take the most extraordinary measures with the support of all involved to stage a fabulous tournament.

Akhiwu Eugene elected into Nigeria Chess Federation Board

Akhiwu Eugene has been elected as the Arbiters/Coaches representative on the board of the Nigeria Chess Federation, NCF.

Akhiwu in the election was unopposed and had 16 votes to his name to emerge as the winner and will now be representing the Coaches and Arbiters on the NCF board.

The September 16th election which took place online started at 10am with nomination of candidates and nomination closed by 11am, leading into the publishing Akhiwu Eugene as the successful candidate for the position. Voting in line with the NSF electoral guidelines commenced at 12 noon as voters dropped their votes to designated numbers until 1pm, the voting closing time. 

Results of the voting which was announced by IA Ogbonnaya Obinna, the election returning officer at 2pm declared Mr Akhiwu Eugene as the winner of the election.

In his victory and result acceptance speech, Akhiwu Eugene said he was happy for the victory and he will use the mandate given to him by Coaches and Arbiters to drive the sports to it's preferred destination, in his own capacity.

"I want to appreciate all members of the family of Chess Arbiters and Coaches for expressing their confidence in my representation through my nomination and result of the ballot box."

"I undertake today to bring the best I can offer to the table in my representation of our family of Arbiters and Coaches on the Board of the Nigeria Chess Federation."

36 Lion share spoils with Coton Sports in friendly

36 Lion displayed impressive performance to draw 1-1 with Coton Sports in Ouidah on Wednesday afternoon.

Azeez Oseni, Eniye Hitler, Moses Usor, Michael Oyekola and Opeyemi Oluwafemi were utilised at the middle of the park by the technical crew of 36 Lion.

On matchday, the enterprising Usor opened the scoring after poking the ball home on 24 minutes.

The Lagos-based side held on till the whistle was blown for halftime. 36 Lion controlled large portions of the game.

With Coton Sports slowly settling into the game, they managed to push the Lagos-based team into their shelf on several occasions before finally breaching the defense of the Lions to draw level.

Although both teams will flourish in their attempt to find the winning goal, neither side had the luck and hence was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at the end of the 90 minutes.

The game forms part of 36 Lion's 10-day training camp in Benin Republic.

Nigerian Coaches President Drums Support for Unity Preseason Tournament

The President of Nigerian Football Coaches Association (NFCA) Isah Ladan Bosso has supported the initiative of  organizing the Unity Preseason Tournament (Unity Cup) in the Federal Capital Territory.

Bosso, who is the Head coach of the National U. 20 Male team (Flying Eagles) said the idea is well conceived and should be embraced by all invited clubs especially those in the North Central zone.

Quoting his words, the Coaches Boss said "the concept is a welcomed development which must be embraced by every club in the North Central zone to among other things assess their new acquisitions, prepare adequately, interact and share ideas with officials of other teams. I wholeheartedly support the concept and we would be ready to make the program a success " he concluded in a message to the organizers. 

The Unity Preseason Tournament will hold in Abuja from 30th October to 5th November. According to the Chairman of the Organizing committee Patrick Ngwaogu (Odogwu Ndi Abia) about 10 teams in the North Central are expected to take part in the tournament. The teams will include Kwara United, Plateau United, Nasarawa United, Lobi Stars, and Niger Tornadoes. Other NNL clubs like EFCC FC, NAF FC, Kogi United have all signified interest to be part of the tournament.

Youth Minister to speak at 76th UN General Assembly

On Thursday, 23rd September, the Honourable Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare, will deliver a keynote address at the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level Side Event on Social Business, Youth and Technology.

The address, which will be delivered virtually, will focus on "Social Business Towards a Sustainable Revival of Post-Covid 19 Economy." The Minister is expected to draw on his extensive wealth of experience in engaging with young business owners, investors, entrepreneurs and innovators across the African continent and beyond.

This is the second time in two years that Mr. Dare has been asked to speak at this particular high-level event. In his keynote address at the 74th UNGA, he said the Youth in Africa’s biggest nation, Nigeria, are in a position to help solve major challenges of the world. He added that Nigeria will rely increasingly on its Youth population to develop smart products and solutions to conquer the challenges and problems of climate change, economic slowdown, unemployment and poverty.

Sunday Dare charges Super Falcons to bounce back from Aisha Buhari Cup loss to South Africa

Youth and Sports Development Minister Sunday Dare has challenged members of the Nigeria senior national Women's football team- Super Falcons to learn from Tuesday's loss to South Africa's Bayana Bayana in the final game of the Aisha Buhari Cup and bounce back.

The Nigerians were outclassed by their opponents 4-2 in the final game of the inaugural edition of the invitational tournament against the expectations of many who had thronged the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan Stadium, Lagos to support them.

Dare told the Super Falcons after the game that they do not have to dwell too long on their disappointing loss.

"I know you are all disappointed with this result. We all wanted a better result and performance but things like this happen in football.

"You have to raise your heads. Watch the game again and identify where you faltered, correct the mistakes then bounce back stronger. Learn from the loss."

The Sports Minister further encouraged the team to switch focus to their next assignment which is just a few weeks away.

"There is another opportunity around the corner. I am happy that we do not have any major injuries to any of you. So you can return to your clubs in good condition and be back for your next assignment in great shape.

"We will continue to appreciate and encourage you for your service to this country. We will always be a pillar of support for you," Dare added.

Air Peace Airline Boss, Onyema doles out N20million to Falcons

President of Air Peace Airline, Barrister Allen Onyema was not dismayed by the lashing received by the Super Falcons in the hands of South Africa’s Banyana Banyana at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Tuesday.

 

He presented the sum of N10 million to the Super Falcons’ class of 1999 that reached the quarter finals of the FIFA Women’s Cup in USA and were honoured by the NFF at a special Awards ceremony in Lagos on Monday, and also gifted the present bunch the sum of N10 million.

 

It would be recalled that Barrister Onyema, whose company became the Official Airline of the Nigeria National Teams following a contract agreement signed earlier this month, motivated the Super Eagles with the sum of N20million to win their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifier against Cape Verde in Mindelo. He promptly redeemed the pledge on the team’s arrival after their victory.
