World Polio Day: Rotary Club of Ilorin Prestige, District 9125 heighten advocacy to keep Nigeria Polio free

In a series of events to commemorate this year's World Polio day, members of the Rotary club of Ilorin Prestige, District 9125 has called on the general public to deepen the fight against the scourge of polio disease.


World Polio day, which holds every 24th of October is a day set aside by the United Nations to further establish the narratives around the eradication of polio in the world.


Speaking during an awareness ride organized by the Rotary Club of Ilorin Prestige  in collaboration with the Kwara State Cycling Association and Kwara State University Cycling Club on Sunday, Rotarian (Dr.) Oluwasiji Rotimi, the polio representative Rotary Club of Ilorin Prestige stated that the significance of the event is to create more awareness in a bid to prevent polio and reduce its negative effects.



He emphasized the need for consistency of advocacy towards keeping the society polio free, even as he described the news of polio break out in the North Western Nigeria after the country has already been declared and certified polio free as unfortunate.


"We are marking the world polio day today and also commemorating the person that invented the first polio vaccine ,Dr. Jonas Salk. It's a series of activities which involves advocacy and field events". Says Rotarian (Dr.) Oluwasiji.


Flagging off the programme,  Rotarian (Dr.) Khadijat 'Toyin Musah, a member of the club who is also the Director, Centre For Wellness and Creative Arts Therapy Kwara State University urged people to prioritize immunization for their children and also take the booster doses while organizations abd government fight the disease head on.



According to Dr. Musah who is also a Board member, Cycling Federation of Nigeria, the Rotary International has invested a lot of resources in eradication of polio and the organization is not relenting in its efforts to maintain the polio zero status of Nigeria with this year's theme of 'One Day, One Focus, Ending Polio: Delivery On Our Promise Of A Polio Free World'. 


While sensitising the public on the eradication of polio, the awareness ride which started and ended at the Kwara Stadium Complex took the Rotarians and cyclists round the Ilorin metropolis  in their large numbers.


The Rotary Club Ilorin Prestige under the leadership of their changemaker President,Rotarian Olufemi Akinola James has been at the forefront, promoting activities geared towards achieving the inception message of the Rotary club International in Kwara State and Nigeria as a whole.
