What Kogi residents are saying over President Tinubu’s first year in office

By Stephen Adeleye

Some residents of Lokoja, Kogi State, have expressed mixed reactions over the achievements and lapses of President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office.

The respondents, who spoke in separate interviews with the News of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, commended Tinubu’s performances in the areas of security, health and education.

They, however, expressed dissatisfaction on most of the president’s policies on the economy, especially without the perceived due consultation with the relevant stakeholders.

Mr Opaluwa Eleojo, the Vice Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kogi council, commended Tinubu for the massive road projects going on across the country.

Eleojo noted that there had been a relative improvement in security all over the country, compared to what was obtainable in the past.

“There was also an increase in revenue to states to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.

“Unfortunately, most state governors diverted it from the purpose intended.

“The signing of the 2023 Electricity Bill, which removed electricity generation, transmission and distribution from the Exclusive List to the Concurrent List thereby empowering states to carry out these functions, is also a good thing,” he said.

Eleojo, also a member of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), however expressed his dissatisfaction with the incessant power grid collapse.

According to him, the country has not recorded the number of grid collapses as witnessed in the last one year.

He decried Tinubu’s administration’s non consultation with major stakeholders before implementing most of his policies which he said later became counterproductive.

“We have seen that in the removal of fuel subsidy, increase in electricity tariff, floating of the Naira, among others,” he said.

Eleojo urged the present administration to engage the relevant stakeholders in all sectors before implementing certain policies going forward.

“We expect to see positive results of the reforms introduced by this administration in the next two to four years.

“We hope to see all the local refineries working at optimal capacity, thereby crashing the price of PMS, AGO, Kerosine and Cooking Gas

“We also expect improvement in electricity generation, stability in the Naira, increase in wages for workers, reduction in inflation level and drastic fall in prices of food.

“We want to see a better living condition for the citizens, affordable housing and health care; improvement in security and reduction in crime rates, among others,” Eleojo said.

He advised the Opposition Political parties to start providing the right kind of opposition that would put the government of the day on its toes.

Another respondent, Dr Kabiru Zubair, a Medical practitioner, said President Tinubu, had admirably steered the nation toward unity and progress, in spite of the daunting challenges experienced in his first year in office.

Zubair, a former Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Kogi chapter, commended the president for his handling of the daunting challenges inherited from the previous administrations.

“I must say that Nigeria is a very difficult country to govern because of religious extremism, ethnocentricity, massive corruption driven economy and numerous vested internal and external interests.

“Hence, it is difficult to observe the impact of any meaningful changes within one year of any administration, especially one that inherited a faulty administrative system,”Zubair said.

He said that the country’s monthly revenue generation had remarkably increased from an average of N600 billion to nearly N2 trillion, over the past one year.

“While insecurity persisted as a pressing concern, Tinubu’s administration had undertaken concerted measures to mitigate widespread violence, terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling, secessionists’ agitations, and armed robbery.

“Tinubu’s tenure has witnessed a notable stability in the health sector, marked by a reduction in the frequency of industrial disputes that marred previous administration’s operations,” he said.

On security, Zubair said that in spite of Tinubu’s strides in curbing terrorism and secessionist movements, incidents of kidnapping and banditry remained prevalent.

He however identified policy inconsistencies, stringent economic measures and a perceived laxity in combating high-level corruption, within government ranks as some of the notable shortcomings of the present administration..

He advised the president to prioritise improving the livelihoods of Nigerians, tackling inflation and currency devaluation, to bolster workers’ wages.

This, he said, would also stem the brain drain of skilled professionals.

On his part, Mr Olukaiyeja Dare, a retired State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, said Tinubu’s regime was a rebirth and rejigning of the country.

According to him, the economic and financial policies so far reflected the reality in the global world.

Dare advised the president against what he termed wasteful spending on unproductive government interventions such as religious pilgrimages and duplicating of appointments in MDAs.

Also speaking, Dr Simeon Oyiguh, a former NMA Chairman in Kogi, commended Tinubu for appointing a proactive minister of health.

He said there was also a balanced appointment of Security Chiefs from the different sections of the country that gave citizens the feeling that the government did not have a hidden agenda.

Oyiguh, however, decried what he called the ‘Knee jerk’ policy and policy summersaults of the president’s administration, saying “it shows that there is need to think through before pronouncements.”

The medical practitioner advised Tinubu’s government to create opportunities that would mitigate brain drain of medical and health personnel.

He also wants him to fill the vacancies created by the exit of medical and health personnel.

“We want improved production of drugs within the country to stabilize cost and availability, improve access to emergency healthcare services by improving access to funds by private medical facilities,” he said.

Oyiguh, also the Chairman, Central Coordinating Committee, Kogi East Neighborhood Watch (KENW), advised governors to be more dedicated to resolving security issues in their domains.

He called for improvement of security presence in areas of continued conflict, and recruitment of more security personnel.

Arewa Group carpets Sports Minister's deflective tactics, sees response by Senator Enoh to Hon. Adams an assault

Arewa Youth Sports Forum on Saturday berated Sports Minister, Senator John Owan Enoh for employing gutter tactics, by attempting to discredit and deflect the issues as advanced by the House Committee Chairman, Hon. Ekene Adams.

A statement signed by the Coordinator of the group, Comrade Yohanna Pam described the Sports Minister's response as disappointing and a blatant attempt to divert attention from the substantive issues raised by the Honorable Member.

The statement reads,"It is concerning to observe the recent Press Release issued by the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, specifically targeting Hon. Ekene Adams and questioning his credibility and sincerity. While the Ministry attempts to defend the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, it is imperative to address certain points raised in the Press Release.

"First and foremost, it is disappointing to note the Ministry's attempt to discredit Hon. Ekene Adams based on his health issues. Implying that his health condition renders him incompetent and out of touch with reality is not only insensitive but a blatant attempt to divert attention from the substantive issues raised by the Honorable Member. It is crucial to remember that personal attacks have no place in constructive discourse, especially within the realm of public service.

"Furthermore, the Ministry's assertion and attempt to belittle the office of that Hon. Adams, reflects a lack of understanding of the principles of democracy and the importance of upholding the dignity of elected representatives. Every individual elected, regardless of their office is higher than a political appointee.Hence, lawmakers deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. The lack of transparency and accountability in Senator Enoh's approach to sports administration has raised concerns among stakeholders, including Hon. Adams, who has highlighted the need for a more responsible and competent leadership in the sector." Pam statement reads.

The statement asked the Sports Minister to stop blaming the CBN for the failure of foreign athletes to receive their payments, noting that his actions is bringing the government President Tinubu to disrepute.

"While defending the Honourable Minister of Sports Development is understandable, it is essential to address the concerns raised by Hon. Adams in a transparent and respectful manner. Constructive dialogue and open communication are key to fostering trust and accountability in governance.Rather than addressing pressing issues such as the delayed payments to foreign athletes who excelled at the African Games in Ghana, as questioned by Hon.Adams, the Minister and Ministry resulted to assault on the lawmaker. We know before now, Senator Enoh has resorted to deflecting blame onto the Central Bank, despite its proven efficiency under the leadership of Olayemi Cardoso, and by extension bringing the Government of President Tinubu to disrepute.

"It is evident that Senator Enoh's tenure as sports minister has been characterized by self-glorification and a disregard for the hard work and dedication of athletes and federation presidents who strive for excellence in sports. His failure to address the challenges facing the sports sector, has only served to exacerbate the existing issues. In contrast, the call for cooperation and collaboration with Hon. Adams, a respected figure in sports with a rich history as both an athlete and administrator, presents an opportunity for Senator Enoh to embrace a more inclusive and effective approach to sports administration in Nigeria.Knowing fully well that the Sports Minister knows nothing in sports administration."The statement reads.

Concluding the statement, Comrade Pam warned the Sports Minister to be careful and trade gently as Mr.President has zero tolerance for corruption

"In conclusion, it is imperative for the minister to know that his present office is at mercy of Mr.President, a man with zero tolerance for corruption.Maybe, the Sports Minister has forgotten how the Tinubu's government is handling Beta Edu's case; coincidentally, they both hail from Cross River state." Comrade Pam concluded his statement.

LSFA denies claims of litigation disrupting football activities in Lagos State

The leadership of Lagos State Football Association, LSFA has denied purported rumours of court cases facing the association that has caused breakdown in it's activities.

In a statement signed by the chairman of the association, Alhaji Gaffar Liameed, there was nothing like courts issues with any group of persons, organization or individual.

The statement confirmed that the only law suit it's aware of was the one concerning 13 individual members of the association challenging their eligibility and has advised it's affected members to seek redress to allow rule of law be respected.

The statement read:

It has been brought to the attention of the Board Members of the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) that there are reports going round about its being embroiled in a court case, thus leading to a disruption in footballing activities at the headquarters in Surulere.

We would like to set the records straight by stating that the LSFA is not involved in any court case with any individual or organization by whatsoever name called.

The LSFA is not and has not been made a party to any court dispute. Therefore footballing activities in and around the LSFA headquarters are ongoing and peaceful too.

Be that as it may, the LSFA is aware that a lawsuit was instituted against the thirteen (13) individual members of the LSFA State Congress, whereby the exercise of their statutory powers, as conferred on them by the LSFA statutes, is being challenged in court.

As a law abiding corporate citizen, the LSFA is mindful of the fact that the law must take its place and this is done by encouraging the Congress members to seek justice through the appropriate channels and in line with the procedures laid down and available in our judicial system.

The Congress members have engaged professional legal representation and are confident in the ability of their legal representation to see that justice is dispensed in the most efficient manner.

The LSFA however, is a going concern, still charged with the responsibility of effectively administering the business of footballing activities in the State.

There is no disruption whatsoever to the administrative functions of the LSFA and we call on all football stakeholders in the State to carry on with their duties and interactions with the LSFA without fear or apprehension.

Thank you.

Signed.

Chairman, Lagos State Football Association.

Olympic Games: National Assembly decries lack of transparency in allocation of intervention funds

The 10th National Assembly has raised concerns about the lack of transparency in the allocation of intervention funds for the 2024 Olympic Games to the Ministry of Sports Development.

The Nigeria Government doled out billions of naira each time the country participated in the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games.

The Chairman House Committee on Sports, Hon. Ekene Adams frowned at the situation where most Sports Federation sponsored their athletes to qualify for Olympic Games without Ministry's support but the Sports Ministry receives money from the government on behalf of the sports federations once they have qualified.

He said, “80% of the National Sports Federation don't get a dime from the funds allocated for them in the budget in each calendar year.”

He therefore advised the Federal Government to ensure that the intervention funds are scrutinised by the National Assembly before they are passed.

“The Bola Ahmed Tinubu led government prioritised transparency and accountability in allocation of funds and the intervention funds for the Olympic Games should follow the same procedure by involving the National Assembly in the scrutiny of the funds. This will ensure that the athletes, coaches and Presidents of the Federations benefit from the funds.

"Transparency in the process is crucial to ensure that the funds are used effectively and efficiently for the development of Sports in Nigeria. Without proper oversight, there is a risk they the funds could be mismanaged or misappropriated leading to waste of resources and missed opportunity to support the dedicated Nigerian athletes who put the country's name on the global map."

He further said, “For instance, foreign athletes who spent their hard-earned money on flight to and fro Ghana for African Games have not received the refund, also, coaches and many other athletes have not received their monetary prize for medals won at the All African Games in Ghana.

“The delay in settlement of these funds will further dampen the spirits of the athletes which in turn may affect Nigeria's performance at the Olympics.

"We must do everything to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Renewed Hope agenda.

The President has been doing everything in making sure that Nigeria is placed among the best in the world and the 10th National Assembly shares same with the President. Therefore, the struggle to place the country among the best should not be left to the Presidency alone."

Media Team, Chairman House Committee On Sports

Briefing newsmen in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State on thursday, the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of SportsGig International, Olayinka Olawole, stated that over 20 Schools have submitted names of participants for the event, which will kickoff on Tuesday, the 28th of May 2024, at the Ultra Modern, Micheal and Felicia Alabi Memorial Table Tennis Hall, Osogbo.

"For us at SportsGig International, we are all about getting people more involved in every aspect of Sports. He said.

"This campaign is one that's very close to my heart, and something I am extremely passionate about, when it comes to providing a conducive environment for young people, especially girls to participate in Sports.

"We know and understand that girls are not well encouraged to participate in sporting activities, reason this Table Tennis Championship is themed "Let The Girls Play".

"The table tennis championship is statewide and also an avenue to drive the agenda of her Excellency, Erelu Ngozi Adeleke commitment to building a better life for the girl child in the state and beyond.

"We really want to appreciate Her Excellency, Wife of the Governor of Osun State, Erelu Ngozi Adeleke for using her good office to create a welcoming environment for girls involvement in Sports, thereby developing their confidence, self esteem and a sense of accomplishment. In the next few days, we shall be rolling out, names of sponsors for this competition. " He Concluded.

On his own part, Co-founder and Chief Operating Manager of SportsGig International, Ibrahim Akinokun reiterated the importance of girl child participation in sports and also the main reason behind the organization of the competition.

"The prevailing societal propensity is to snigger at the cardinality of the girl-child involvement in sports. This has morphed into a stereotype that has to be changed. Female athletes have brought more glory to Nigeria in international sporting arena, despite the headwind of encumbrances they often have to charge through."

"We cannot obscure the reality that, Nigeria's hitherto dominance of the African female table tennis landscape has waned owing to an acute dearth of young female talents to take over the baton from the veterans. It is therefore wholly within the bounds of reason the necessity to create a platform for female talent discovery and harnessing".

"On this forthcoming championship, we are standing on the shoulders of giants, and our enthusiasm of a desired outcome of it is the sea of stars. All the pieces are sliding into place and we harbour skyscraping hope that the inaugural edition of the Erelu Ngozi Adeleke Table Tennis Championship For Female Secondary School Students will turn out a resounding success". He Concluded.

Honourable Adams chides Sports Minister over insincerity, transparency

Chairman House Committee on Sports, Honourable Ekene Adams, says the Minister of Sports Development Senator John Enoh, is not showing enough sincerity in the Country Sports Development goals.

The Lawmaker representing Chikun Kajuru Federal constituency in Kaduna State says the House Committee on Sports has expressed a lot of retrains with it's dealing with the Minister since he was appointed, more especially because he was a former lawmaker but the Minister has not reciprocated with a good level of transparency.

"The House Committee  on Sports and my personal self have been very co-operative with the Minister of Sports all these while but we have discovered it seems he is taking us for granted with some of the things we are seeing so far.

"We decided to accord him the ultimate regard and respect because he is a former legislator but we discovered he is taking us for granted which we find totally unacceptable.

"As he is new in the Sports sector and appointed as a Sports Minister he should ask questions because he came into the sector as a farmer and he should know that some of us are sports technocrats who have been in football for all our life, as former footballer and then administrator.

"For example, why should the Minister still allocate budget for the renovation and maintenance of the Ahmadu Bello stadium in the 2024 budget after the stadium had been handed over to the Kaduna State Government.

"I think as the Chairman House Committee on Sports, we have tried enough to have a smooth and good understanding with the Minister but he is not being sincere with us," he maintained.

NLO showcases Nimi; youngest goalscorer in 2024 season

The Nationwide League One has over the years provided an important platform for the best young footballers, offering more competitive games against top-quality opposition, giving players essential experience of international competition and reducing the gap between youth and first-team football.

The 2024 New Year Mega Lottery/NLO didn't end without new feats and records broken by a few special talents, from the over 10,000 players that took part in the season.

Academy football in the world has a complex relationship with winning, it is rarely seen as a condition for player development but for 14-year-old Patrick Adeoluwanimi Akhidenor-Solanke, his celebration after becoming the youngest player to score a goal this season, demonstrates how much the feat meant to him.

Immensely gifted Nimi is a product of Provazios Sports Academy, owned by his father Segun Solanke. Regardless of his age, the boy wonder captained his team- Olumo United Football Club at the NLO Sagamu Centre and scored against Lasegski FC at the FC Ebedei Stadium.

Segun Solanke talked about how he enrolled Nimi into the academy at the age of four years, and since then, Nimi’s young career has been enjoying tremendous growth and progress.

In 2023, Nimi told The Nation in an interview: "I want to win the Balon d’Or. My dad told me George Weah of Liberia is the only African footballer to have won the Ballon d’Or."

“Like my idols Messi and Ronaldo, I believe that with more hard work, discipline, perseverance, dedication and focus, I can bring home the honour in the near future,”

The youngster has matched his words with action with the wonder strike against Lasegski FC.

For Nimi's father, Segun, he's full of optimism about his prodigy. "In the next five years, we believe he would have become the youngest Nigerian to play for the Super Eagles and also, be playing in one of the top-flight leagues around the world. And particularly, playing for Real Madrid, as the wonder boy from Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the management of the third-tier domestic football league has expressed their happiness at Nimi's remarkable achievement. They believe it is a testament to their plans to develop Nigerian football by encouraging younger footballers to grow their careers and in the end, earn a good living from it.

"Second FC Ebedei stadium will be world-class" - Joshua Adamu

FIFA and CAF-certified sports facility expert and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Alan Smith, Joshua Adamu has informed plans to deliver another world-class stadium for FC Ebedei.

Joshua Adamu gave the hint of the plan while in a media chat with Family United By Football (FUBF) an informative sports group on a social media platform- WhatsApp.

According to the Innovative and energy-driven sports facility manager of repute, "The FC Ebedei Stadium is three years old and still counting and it's still looking new. This is because quality was not compromised, and the core expert was used.

"Interestingly, the stadium is about the only pitch in Nigeria presently running fully on the French drain. You don't see any open drainage on the pitch.

"All drainages are underground and it's also one of the few pitches in Nigeria on full shock pads, not the usual underlays.

"So that gives the pitch extra cushion effects, and the players will be able to enjoy it and that's why experts and scouts that have visited the pitch have been commending the work done there.

"By the grace of God, this year, FC Ebedei will be having its second stadium ready. That will be coming with a better quality and new look. They say the reward for good work is more work.

"We are proudly associated with that pitch and we intend to build on it. What you see there is simple quality and no compromise."

Golden Eaglets is intact, news of failed MRI test is false alarm

The news that first team members of Golden Eaglets failed MRI test is not correct. The team is intact.

Football fans in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja and it's environs that have been watching the training sessions friendly matches of the Golden Eaglets can bear witness that the team is taking shape and remained intact.

Please if you live in Abuja, feel free to come and watch the Eaglets train at the FIFA Goal Project, Abuja stadium. You can find out.

The MRI test conducted by the NFF found few players on grade 5 and these players are out.

The pass grade is from grades 1 - 5, but the policy of NFF is that players on grade 5 will not be taken to the competition venue because they may fall into grade 6 when CAF conduct their own MRI test due to the fact that the borderline between grade 5 and 6 is very little.

In order to avoid that risk, the NFF insists that only players from grade 1 - 4 will represent Nigeria at the International tournament.

The team played another friendly game today and defeated Turbo touch academy 2-0.
