"We’ve only just begun’: Omamofe reveals plans for Dino Sporting Club in 2025

Dino Sporting Club President, Samuel Columbus Omamofe, remains optimistic about the club's future, despite its already impressive achievements.

Founded in 2016, Dino Sporting Club has grown into one of Nigeria's premier football academies, standing alongside the likes of Beyond Limits.

“When I started Dino Sporting Club, it was an entirely new experience. I chose to establish the academy in Ogun State because I wanted a more secluded and secure environment,” Omamofe told the club's media team.

“We secured proper camping facilities in Abeokuta, and in 2016, we held an open trial and a three-day screening exercise at Legacy Pitch. We returned to Abeokuta with 50 players.”

Reflecting on the club’s early days, Omamofe admitted it wasn’t an easy journey.

“As a matter of fact, the journey hasn’t been smooth. In the early stages, I made a few mistakes, which I was able to correct over time. For instance, I realized I should have started with younger players in the U15 age range, whom we could have developed into stars over the years.”

Under Omamofe’s leadership, Dino Sporting Club has clinched several titles, including the Creative Championship League Cup and the Supremacy Cup. The club also finished as runners-up twice in the TCC League Cup and competed at the prestigious Viareggio Cup in Italy.

Additionally, Dino Sporting Club has produced several players who have gone on to excel in the Nigerian top flight and European leagues, including Ogonna Hyacinth, who signed for Belgian side Westerlo.

“We’ve enjoyed some measure of success, with about five players performing well at various European clubs. That has brought joy and revenue to the club,” he said with a smile.

Omamofe credited his achievements to divine guidance and unwavering support from his wife.

“First of all, I want to thank God. And, of course, a big thank you to my wife, who has been very supportive. There were times I had to borrow money from her to keep the football business going. She’s been steadfast in her faith and has grown alongside the vision.

“Sometimes, I have to travel for days, both within and outside Nigeria, for this business. In the end, we share the benefits of this work together.”

While 2024 has been a productive year for Dino Sporting Club, Omamofe is already setting his sights on achieving even greater milestones in 2025.

“The future is bright and dazzling. It can only get better and brighter. Right now, all eyes are on Dino Sporting Club. It’s been a good story, and we thank God for that,” he concluded.

Decline in Nigerian Football: Dino SC Boss, Samuel Columbus pushes for reform, private investment

Omamofe’s call highlights the urgent need for reforms in Nigerian football, both at the national and grassroots levels, as the country seeks to reclaim its place among Africa’s footballing giants.

Seasoned football administrator Samuel Columbus Omamofe has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint a visionary coach for the Super Eagles and exercise patience in implementing long-term development plans.

The Super Eagles are currently without a head coach following the departure of Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro, who led the team to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d'Ivoire.

In the interim, NFF technical director Austin Eguavoen stepped in to oversee a successful qualification campaign for the 2025 AFCON. However, both Peseiro and Eguavoen have faced criticism for their playing styles.

As the crucial final phase of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers approaches, Omamofe believes the NFF must prioritize hiring a coach with a clear vision for Nigerian football.

“Football is a game of passion, and playing for Nigeria should be seen as a great honor for any player. I remember during the days of Clemens Westerhof; we had a visionary coach who knew what he wanted for Nigerian football over five years.

"He received tremendous support from the NFF and the government. When he left, we had Bonfrere Jo and Philippe Troussier, and there was a clear transition,” Omamofe said.

“Unfortunately, in the last 10 years, the performance of the national team has declined. If I were in charge, I would appoint a coach with a 4-5 year progressive plan. Football development is like a marathon — it takes time.”

Omamofe also raised concerns about Nigerian club football, highlighting its struggles on the continental stage.

"He pointed out that only Enyimba made it to the group phase of the CAF Confederation Cup this season. However, the team sits at the bottom of their group with no wins in three matches and faces the risk of early elimination.

This failure could reduce Nigeria’s continental slots from four to two for the next season.

“The government and the NFF have deviated from the structures that once sustained Nigerian football,” Omamofe added.

“We need competitions to groom players and coaches, like the Principals Cup, the Ajegunle Mock Nations Cup, and other grassroots football programs. I have always said grassroots football is the solution to Nigeria’s football challenges.”

He stressed the need for private sector involvement, lamenting the dominance of state-owned clubs in Nigeria’s domestic leagues.

“In the last 20 years, we have mainly had state-owned clubs in the Nigerian leagues. I always commend Hon. Kunle Soname for his contributions to Nigerian football.

Football is a multi-billion-dollar business, and we need to encourage more private investors to come into the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL),” Omamofe concluded.

TCC League: Unauthorised VAR drama costs Dino Sporting crucial win in Ikenne

Dino Sporting Club was held to a controversial draw by Beyond Limits on matchday eight of the TCC League on Saturday.

Coming into the game, Dino Sporting was eager to end a four-game winless streak. Despite struggling since the start of October with just one win in their last six matches, the team displayed a revitalized performance against the league leaders in Ikenne.

Godwin Gibson's side dominated proceedings and deservedly took the lead just before halftime.

They maintained their advantage throughout the second half and were seconds away from a hard-fought victory when the referee handed the hosts a lifeline by awarding a penalty in the 97th minute.

TCC Cup: Coach Gibson hails Dino SC despite draw against Real Sapphire

Dino Sporting Club kicked off their Creative Championship League Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Real Sapphire in a Group A clash on Sunday.

The match ended in a stalemate after 90 minutes, marking the second draw between the two teams this season.

After a goalless first half, Dino took the lead three minutes before the hour mark when Stephen Shedrack opened his account with a well-placed low shot just inside the box.

However, the lead was short-lived, as Real Sapphire equalized five minutes later.

Dino Sporting Club Head Coach, Godwin Gibson, spoke positively about his team’s performance despite the draw, noting that the players are still learning and improving.

"It was a very good game. The players are still developing, and we showed improvement from last week when we faced the same team. The performance today is closer to what we expect," Gibson said.

He also emphasized the need for focus after scoring. "It happens even at the highest level. We always tell the players to stay composed after scoring. Unfortunately, we had a poor reaction after the goalkeeper parried the ball, allowing the rebound due to a lack of concentration."

This result means Dino Sporting Club has now drawn all three of their matches across all competitions this season.

10 players tipped to light up Lagos Supremacy Cup

Which youngsters will break out at the 18th edition of Lagos Supremacy Cup in Lagos and become stars of the future?

We run the rule on 10 players in Part 2 of our series, as countdown for Lagos Supremacy Cup continues.

10. Taiwo Popoola [Corinthians]

An all-round forward with great movement, sharp finishing and excellent technique, Taiwo Popoola is the one man riot for Corinthians.

He likes to occupy central defenders whenever his team is on transition. A tough customer to deal with, Popo will be a handful for defenders with his direct running and energy.

9. Habeeb Mubarak [SGFC]

Raw but exciting, the playmaker is always the livewire for SGFC whenever they need inspiration. Mubarak hardly gives the ball away. He is an intelligent player with wicked passes at his feet.

He has quick feet and an opportunistic eye for goal. The lad can also function as a wing back. The Lagos Supremacy Cup could be a great opportunity to justify the hype around him.

8. Okoro Hycainth Ugonna [Dino SC]

Okoro has the lighting pace of a 100m sprinter, dazzling footwork and, crucially, the bravado that torments opposition defenders and makes him a joy to watch when he has space to run into.

While not the finished article, the potential is clear to see.  Given the way the tournament can make names in an instant and then see them disappear to Europe in the next, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him making a move abroad.

7. Akinbiyi Sodiq [Tripple 44]

Sodiq is your archetypal versatile defensive midfielder, capable of playing as either the principal holding midfielder or as the more forward-thinking of a double pivot duo, due to his mobility, passing and tactical discipline. He plays like Frenchman N'golo Kante.

Always looking to receive the ball from the centre backs, he retains and recycles possession well, creating smooth transitions from defence to attack. Interesting material to keep a close eye on.

6. Isaiah Edwin [DN10]

There is a youngster on the books of DN10. He is named Isaiah Edwin. A breakout starlet from the street, Edwin has been well moulded by coach Olajide Williams.

The teenager is a tall, elegant central midfielder who orchestrates his team's play with his excellent range of passing and eye for a defence-splitting through ball.

5. Caleb Okereke [FC Bethel]

You can always rely on FC Bethel and their reservoir to give youth a chance and their current squad does not disappoint. One player who looks as if he'll have an increasingly important role at the Supremacy Cup is versatile attacking midfielder Caleb Okereke.

The starlet possesses great vision, exquisite passing and a smooth running style, which has seen him compared to Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne.

4. Jeremiah Christopher [Broad City]

An elegant, unique and skilful forward, Christopher is dazzling the Broad City faithful with his invention and audacity.

Typically a left-sided wide forward but able to play anywhere across the front line, Christo is equal parts scorer and creator as he effortless glides past defenders with his sublime footwork and slips in delicate through-balls. But there is a steel and determination to his game too, making it hard to muscle him off the ball. Voltage as he is also called, blends technical and physical qualities which make him a joy to watch and his potential is limitless.

3. Waliu Ojetoye [Ikorodu City]

Ikorodu City's squad is brimming with interesting young prospects. One of them is Waliu Ojetoye.

A lovely crosser and comfortable on the ball, Ojetoye loves to get forward like the legendary Dani Alves and has the secret weapon of the Oga Boys. He is intelligent, strong, calculative and technically grounded.

2. Eric Ologe [Imperial]

Imperial FC have had a steady stream of exciting prospects coming through the ranks. Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is a graduate of the team and the production line isn't showing signs of slowing up. Defensive midfielder Eric Ologe is the Army General of his team.

He must have taken some tips from co owner of Imperial FC, Seyi Olofinjana who had an accomplished career as Super Eagles defensive midfielder.

The hardworking Ologe is a steely midfielder who can cover protect the backline for 120 minutes without getting tired. He is strong defensively and aerially, as well as one who offers potent attacking threat.

1. John Alex [36 Lion]

Dubbed the next Patrick Vieira, box-to-box midfielder Alex could be one of the revelations of the tourney. A powerful and muscular presence in the centre of the park, Pankere has also shown his penchant for driving forward and unleashing low driven shots from range, on top of the noteworthy defensive side to his game too.

He was a member of the Nigeria U16 Future Eagles team that travelled to Japan. He is in SS3 with heart of a PHD holder.

TCC League: Ogonna Hyacinth inspires Dino Sporting Club to big win at Dannaz FC

Dino Sporting Club continues their impressive start to the 2023/2024 Creative Championship League campaign with a commanding 3-0 win at Dannaz on Saturday.

The Godwin Gibson's tutored side arrived Onikan Stadium, Lagos, with much confidence following their opening day 4-1 win over Atlantic Business FC last weekend.

The first half was a cagey affairs as both sides cut each other out and went into the break unscratched.

Dino Sporting Club however found a way past their hosts in the second 45 minutes and scored three times, with their talisman Ogonna Hyacinth heavily involved in the goals.

Chidubem Diji netted the first goal following an assist Ogonna Hycainth.

Hyacinth added the second few minutes later, before Christian Nwachukwu sealed the memorable win with the third goal.

The victory keeps Dino Sporting Club top of the table with six maximum points with seven goals scored and one conceeded.

TCC League Preview: Dino SC takes scoring mood to Dannaz

Dino’s 4-1 win against Atlantic Business was the first time they scored four goals on MatchDay 1. They will be hoping to continue their rampant start to the season when they travel to face Dannaz.

If they’re to make the most of their first home game this season, Coach Fatai’s must first find their scoring boots. Dannaz drew blanks in their opening game of the season, falling to Sporting Lagos. Two losses in a row is too costly to afford at the moment.

The hosts can draw inspiration from a similar meeting that happened months back. Last season, both sides met on MatchDay 2, with Dannaz outscoring their opponents in a five-goal thriller. Coach Fatai won’t mind a similar outcome this weekend. But can they keep Coach Godwin’s boys at bay and get the win?

STAT ATTACK

It’s the second time in a row both sides are meeting on MatchDay 2 of the league season. Coincidence

MAN TO WATCH

His double in the first game earned him the Man of the Match award. It also makes him one to watch out for in this clash.
