Ondo SWAN Boss Blames Sunshine Stars for Sacking Unuanel

The Chairman of Ondo State Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Akintunde Akinsemola has insisted that the former Kwara United handler, Samson Unuanel was not responsible for Owena Waves' early collapse in the Nigeria topflight.

Akinsemola who stated this in Akure denied that Unuanel was at fault for Sunshine Star’s stuttering campaign in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Coach Unuanel was fired following the Owena Waves’ 2-1 to MFM FC on Wednesday and was replaced by Sunshine Queen’s Kayode Olujohungbe.

"Unuanel has been in charge of Sunshine Stars for just three matches, a home draw to Akwa United, an away loss to Lobi Stars and MFM FC so basically you can't say Unuanel is a failure just after three matches," Akinsemola told Goal.

"If you take a closer look at Sunshine Stars from last season a couple of players went on to play for the Super Eagles but these top rated players have left Sunshine Stars. Players like Prince Aggreh, Paul Onobi, Tunde Adeniji who was on the list of top scorers from last season and Cameroonian, Termen Medrano who has been very consistent for Sunshine Stars have all left.

"Now you brought a set of new players and a new coach and then you expect Samson Unuanel to perform magic? As far as I'm concerned, Sunshine Stars haven't replaced those quality players that left the team. When you allow your best legs to go you must sign players that will step in successfully but honestly Sunshine Stars haven't done that.

"The players that came into Sunshine Stars this season aren't good enough, they are rejects from other clubs so why sack Unuanel? It's obvious now that Sunshine Stars will start from the scratch again because the same reason why Sunshine Stars haven't done well in the league the new man in-charge may also be found wanting."

Though the management of Sunshine Stars mentioned that lack of unity between coach Samson Unuanel and head technical Henry Abiodun compelled the sacking, Akinsemola believes there are better ways to handle such situation.

"In-house fighting isn't uncommon in football, Luis Enrique had it with Lionel Messi but it has been solved, Cristiano Ronaldo had it with Raphael Benetez and I want to believe that he's even having a problem with Zinadine Zidan even though the coach has been positive about Ronaldo in the media so basically it happens but even if there were any form of infighting between Henry Abiodun and Samson Unuanel then the management should have settled it we ought not to know about it even if it exist," he added.

"You see people will come out with make believes, you sacked your coach just because of internal problem between two coaches. The management ought to have settled that, please where does the club go from here? While other clubs are consolidating on their preparations Sunshine Stars is about to start from the beginning. As we speak the development at Sunshine Stars camp isn't a good thing at all.

"Sacking of coaches isn't a good option for the club, Kennedy Boboye who led the team to a good outing last season was forced to leave and now Samson Unuanel has been sacked, is sacking the only option? Look at, there's no coach that will sign a bad contract, now I guess for sacking Unuanel Sunshine Stars will have to pay him at least a year pay."
