Nigeria League Board Leadership: NFF AGA Communique Forbids Incumbent Second Term

By Adewale Ajayi

Many have busied themselves discussing the controversial Article 12 of the NFF AGA communique but not many have taken time to really study Article 9 of this communique to really understand the reality of the situation on ground.

Disturbed by the falling standard of our Leagues especially the women's League, the Congress deemed it necessary to follow global best practices in restructuring the Leagues starting with reconstituting new boards of the various leagues as early as January next year.
In line with this directive, the club owners who are the key stakeholders in the various leagues are expected to come up with a list of three representatives that will either be nominated, elected or selected. All three will then be integrated into a formidable governing Council to be drawn up by the NFF executive committee. The NFF in his wisdom will appoint two directors and one chairman of the league board to work alongside a secretary of the board. That forms the governing structure that will supervise the Leagues for the next four years.
Now another interesting point of note is in the second paragraph where it is clearly stated that the chairman and two directors must be independent meaning they must not be chairman or chairperson of a club participating in any of the Leagues. Unfortunately, the immediate past chairperson of the women's League is the proprietor of Capital City doves based in Abuja and that automatically rules her out of reckoning in the scheme of things. Now see below the full text of Article 9 to fully understand where the NFF is heading to. Like the LMC is now independent, all three Leagues will be independent with vibrant and intelligent personalities of proven and untainted records selected to oversea the workings by putting in place an effective marketing team that will ensure that the Leagues get sponsors before the end of the first quarter. This information is from the grapevine. You can take it to the bank.
9) Congress approved that the Executive Committee should commence the process of constituting new Boards for the Nigeria National League, Nigeria Women Football League and the Nation-wide League One, by instituting a governing structure for the Leagues (pursuant to article 18 of NFF and FIFA Statutes; article 17.2 of FIFA Statutes and Article 78 of NFF Statutes) to ensure the Leagues are structured in line with global best practices. It was further resolved that the governing structure should have an independent chairmen and independent directors, and club representatives, to be constituted through a Selection Committee comprising participating Clubs in the Leagues and NFF representatives.
Tomorrow, I will take time to explain article 12 of the communique to further enlighten you about the thinking of the Congress.
