Aiteo Cup: Tornadoes pip J. Atete in Lokoja

By Wale Mustapha

Niger Tornadoes defeated 10 men Julius Atete 1-0 in the Round 32 of the 2017 Aiteo Cup clash played at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja on Wednesday.

The goal that settled the duel came inside second minute of the game after Abdullahi Wakili headed into far end from Wilfred Ammeh's corner.

The hosts could have doubled their lead moments later but were unlucky as Awwal Tanko shoot aimlessly inside the box after dribbled past two Atete defenders.

Tornadoes were in dominant form of the game until about half an hour mark when Atete settled in and took the game to their hosts which almost equalized in the 33rd minutes but Ohrobotie Ovayo shoot wide from edge of the box.

The newly promoted NNL side also created series of scoring chances but Stephen Sodje and Ovayo failed to convert.

Atete were reduced to 10 men with a minute to end the half time when Idiodemise Etumere received his second bookings after redirected a free kick into Tornadoes' box with his hand.

Both sides retired to the dressing room at half time with Tornadoes leading by a slender margin and with a numerical advantage.

The hosts could not really capitalized Atete's deficiency to get more goals and that gave Atete the believe to attack but weren't clinical with few chances created in the final stage.

Tornadoes' Technical Adviser, Abubakar Bala who is happy over his side's progress to the next round of the competition noted that his boys could not played as expected due to fatigue from playing a league game barely 48 hours earlier.

He however promised that Tornadoes would take the Aiteo Cup games with more focus as he aimed to go farther in the reorganized cup game.
