The quarter-final fixtures of the Women’s Federation Cup continues today across the nation and defending champions, Sunshine Queens will be up against six-time champions, Rivers Angels at the Area 3 pitch in Abuja.
It was at this stage that Rivers Angels were beaten 2-1 last season by Confluence Queens to halt their hopes of clinching the trophy for the seventh time.
Consequently, both teams will look to get into the next round at the other's peril. Angels will be hoping to banish last year's ghosts while Sunshine Queens will do all they can to get to the next stage towards defending their crown.
The two sides have already met this season. The Port-Harcourt side had the better of the first encounter defeating the Akure girls 2-0 in a Nigeria Women Premier League game.
They equally met two seasons ago in the finals of the Federation Cup where Rivers Angels emerged victorious to clinch their 6th Federation Cup diadem.
This match, which arguably is the standout tie of the round will see two teams go head to head to see who finally makes it to the last four.
Rivers Angels captain, Charity John says the team is ready to give in their best.
“It was just at this stage we were knocked out last year and we’ve learnt our mistakes from it,”she told Rivers Angels Media
“So there’s nothing new there, we’ll just go out, do our best as we usually do. We are focused and ready to play our best,” she added.
Rivers Angels top striker, Amarachi Ojinma has urged her teammates to be totally calm in tomorrow’s game.
“I expect victory in tomorrow’s game, we have to go all out and make sure we win the game,”Ojinma said
“I want everyone to be calm and we don’t need to rush our opponents".
On her part, left back, Mabel Effiom believes her side has what it takes to match the Sunshine team defensively.
“I believe I’ll do my best to stop their attack from my end and we equally have what it takes to match them because there’s nothing special about them so we will do a nice job during the game on Wednesday,” she said.
Rivers Angels defeated FC Robo 3-2 in the Round of 32 before walking over Capital City Doves in the Round of 16 to reach the quarter-finals of the Federation Cup.
Kick-off time is 1:00pm at the Area 3 pitch in Abuja.
