Ilorin Agog as 2nd National Youth Games Begins



All is now set for the second edition of the National Youth Games, NYG scheduled for Ilorin, Kwara state from 21st to 30th, September, 2016. 

Over 2000 young athletes are expected to compete for honors and trophies at the 2016 NYG in eleven sporting events without ball games, according to the organizers, the Ministry of Sports.

The sports to be competing for includes athletics (100m, 200m, 400m and 4x100m), Badminton (male and female), Chess (male and female), Cricket, Scrabble and Table Tennis. 

Other combat sports includes, Judo (male and female), Karate (male and female), Taekwondo (male and female) and wrestling (male and female). 

Para games are not left out as para athletics and para table tennis will be featured. 

The latest accredited sport, Skating will be given the opportunity to demonstrate at the 2nd National Youth Games in Ilorin. 

Confirming the date and readiness for the games, chairman Directors of sports in Nigeria, Coach Tunde Kazeem said the games would breed new crops of athletes that will be groomed to stardom as well as promotion of unity among the competing pupils.

Coach Kazeem, who is also the Director of Sports at the Kwara State Sports Council  described as unfortunate the exclusion of some sports, especially the ball games  (football, basketball, handball et al) blaming it on lack of funds.

He said the challenges would be addressed to accommodate the ball games in the next edition.

It will be recalled that the maiden National Youth Games took place in Abuja 3 years ago (2013).
