NWPL: Rivers Angels Suffer First League Defeat in Akure

Champions Rivers Angels suffered her first defeat in the 2016 Nigeria Women Premier League game played today at the Akure stadium.

Two controversial goals from Ijeoma Obi and Funso Ogunrinola ensured the league champions lost 2-0 to the home side Sunshine Queens.

The Port Harcourt side were caught offside on several occasions by both assistant referees thereby frustrating every effort they made upfront.

As if that was not enough, every throw-in taken by the visiting team was ruled a foul-throw by center referee.

Rivers Angels thought they had the lead in the 21st minute through Orji Chinwendu's effort but center referee ruled it offside to compound the frustration of the visitors.

The first half ended goalless after 40 minutes as both teams went into the dressing room.

On resumption of the second half, Yetunde Aluko curled a cross from outside the box which was already heading off the post but Ijeoma Obi managed to get her right arm to the ball and guided it into the net in the 59th minute to put Sunshine Queens ahead.

Funsho then completed the rout in the 82nd minute via a controversial spot kick.

Head coach of Sunshine Queens, Wemimo Mathew after the game said she was impressed with the way her girls played.

“I feel very happy with the game when we went to their home we lost 2-0 and have won them here today on the same margin”

“I appreciate the efforts of my girls, they did quite well and at the end, we came out victorious”, she added.

On his part, Technical Adviser of Rivers Angels, Edwin Okon could not hide his disappointment at the match officials.

“I must say this is the worst officiating I have ever seen in my entire career,” Okon lamented.

“They claim we robbed them when they came to Port Harcourt but we also played them on a neutral ground during the Federation Cup quarter-finals
 in Abuja and still came out victorious”, Okon said.

On the numerous offside calls by the assistant referees, Okon said;

“Those calls frustrated my girls, they couldn't go upfront, even the throws that were ruled as foul throws were discouraging”, he added.

Rivers Angels will be at home next weekend to take on Adamawa Queens.
