Ahead of
Kogi State gubernatorial poll, a group under the auspices of Kogi Women in
Politics, KWIP, has advocated the involvement of women in the governance of the
state.
KWIP also
appealed to Kogi women to contest all elective position in the forthcoming
election, insisting that women were known to succeed where men falter.
Addressing
journalists in Abuja yesterday, KWIP National Coordinator, Hajiya Zainab
Mohammed, said the organisation is out to push for the 35 per cent affirmation
action in the state.
She
described as intolerable the continued neglect of women in sensitive positions
in the state since its creation, about 24 years ago.
Hajia
Mohammed said: “It is disheartening to know that Kogi women for many years have
been relegated to ordinary political onlookers with little or no position
created for women by the political actors in the state.
This
singular act of gender negligence has heightened mistrust and lack of
confidence between the government and the governed.”
In order
to address the drift, Hajiya Mohammed said that the group had commenced
mobilisation of women from all the electoral wards in the state for the launch
of a campaign tagged:”Kickstart Objective Good Governance Initiative, KOGGI.”
According
to her, the initiative will not only help to enthrone people-oriented
government, but also the one that would make real promises of democracy and
fulfill them.
In her
own contribution, KWIP director, Hajiya Habiba Ismaila, said the organisation
would mobilise women in the state to abstain from voting if the gladiators in
the forthcoming election refuse to provide a level playing ground for all to
pursue their political aspiration. She said the group would also work to ensure
that a woman become deputy governor in the state.
Ask which
political interest the group is pursuing, she said: “We are not a political
group, rather, we are a non partisan organisation committed to ensuring
adequate representation of women in the governance of the state, irrespective
of political affiliation. We will also engage in mass sensitisation to
enlighten Kogi women on their political rights.”
