Rivers Angels perch on Ben Women to book Aiteo Cup quarter final ticket


Defending Champions, Rivers Angels proved too strong for their opponents, Ben Women FC of Cross Rivers as they trashed them 9-0 to inside the mainbowl of the Yakubu Gowon Stadium on Wednesday to advance to the last eight of the competition.
Amarachi Ojinma put in four, Rafiat Sule had a brace while Amanda Mbadi, Mabel Effiom and Patience Kalu all scored on the day to humble Ben Women FC in an entertaining encounter.
Sule hit the ground running in the 4th minute off a Mabel Effiom cross and Ojinma headed home to double the lead in the 35th minute. 
Before the break, Sule and Ojinma increased the tally to 4-0 in a space of two minutes in added time.
In the 61st minute, Mbadi squared in from 20yards at the far right to make it 5-0 and two minutes later, Ojinma got her 3rd. 
In the 65th minute, goalkeeper of Ben Women FC, Azubuike Prisca got fed up and took off her gloves as she walked away from her post but the center referee allowed play to continue and a player of the away side handled the ball inside the box.
Reserved goalkeeper, Cele Emeka was then brought on as Kalu stepped up to take the spot kick which she parried but the winger followed up to send home the rebound in the 69th minute.
Ojinma got her fourth goal of the day in the 72nd minute before Mabel Effiom wrapped things up six minutes later with a beautiful strike from the left flank.
After the game, Head Coach of Rivers Angels, Edwin Okon expressed his happiness at the high scoreline, saying it was not an easy feat.
"You should know we're the defending champion so It wasn't an easy one," said the gaffer.
"However, I am overwhelmed with joy because scoring 9 goals in a competition like this is not easy.
"The Aiteo Cup is one that has lots of surprises and there are no pushovers so I am quite happy," added Okon.
