Rivers United season in review

Started the season as a favorites to win all competitions, but Rivers United were unable to conquer any in the 2016/2017 football season.

The Portharcourt based NPFL club had a torrid season after ending the previous season as runners up behind champions Enugu Rangers as they struggle for form and results all through the season.

Check out Rivers United's season review for the outgone season as compiled by the club's media department.

Enjoy it.

AITEO CUP
Rivers United 0-0 (6-7 PSO) Julius Atete FC
Date: August 16, 2017
Venue: Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt

Rivers United reached the quarter final of the Cup last year and were expected, by the home faithful, to go at least one better in 2017.

It wasn’t to be as the phrase usually associated with Cup competitions, the world over, ‘the scourge of the giants and the delight of minnows’ was ruthlessly displayed as the ‘Pride of Rivers’ crashed out at the very first hurdle.

Julius Atete FC represented the opposition at the round of 64 stage and United were expected to make light work of the opposition.

It wasn’t to be though as a largely lucid display by the Port Harcourt darlings saw unheralded opposition claim prestigious scalp.

Under the fading lights in overcast conditions, it went down to the lottery of penalties and the both sides duly stepped up to the occasion, converting their first five spot kicks.

Bernard Ovoke, Emeka Atuloma, Ifeanyi Nweke, Guy Kuemian and Yusuf Jaiyeola were the first five spot kick takers for United and they converted with aplomb.

Julius Atete’s plucky stars also made no mistakes from their first five attempts so the procedure duly proceeded to ‘sudden death’.

Daniel Israel was the first to score but with Atete also standing their ground, Zoumana Doumbia, the next Rivers United man on the spot light knew he could afford to make no mistakes from 11 metres.

He struck his effort firmly enough but it clattered against the cross bar as United hearts sank in unison.

Abraham Ovmiomoduaho then stepped forward for Julius Atete and duly converted the most important spot kick of his life to send shock waves across the Nation.

It was the biggest shock of the competition as United crashed out with a whimper.

CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Rivers United’s expedition into the waters of Africa’s premiere club competition threatened to reach dizzying heights but ended in heart breaking fashion.

The Port Harcourt club played four matches in the competition and was within touching distance of a spot in the group stages of the competition but came unstuck when they faced one of the grandest institutions in African football – Al Merreikh.

GAME ONE
AS Real Bamako (Mali) 0-0 Rivers United
Date: February 11, 2017
Venue: Stade Modibo Kéïta, Bamako

This was a highly tactical affair which United could have performed a smash and grab but for profligacy displayed by key dramatis personae during decisive moments.

Lukman Mohammed inexplicably headed over from close range after he was expertly set up by Nzube Anaezemba’s precise cross from the right.

Guy Kuemian and Bernard Ovoke enjoyed gilt-edged opportunities in the second half but failed to convert as the dominant visitors were left to ponder what might have been.

United however knew they had a week to put things right in a week’s time, in front of teeming home support and they would oblige in spectacular fashion.

GAME TWO
Rivers United 4-0 AS Real Bamako (Mali)
Date: February 19, 2017
Venue: Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt

A victory, even by a solitary goal margin was all United required to upstage Real in this one but they went for the kill and scored four times without reply at a frenzied Yakubu Gowon Sadium, Port Harcourt.

Bernard Ovoke’s well-struck penalty on 28 minutes separated the sides at the break but there were nervous moments with the hosts knowing that just one goal, at that stage, by the Malians, would see their opponents progress on the away goals rule, instead.

Esosa Igbinoba’s goal just before the hour calmed frayed nerves before Ovoke completed his brace in the 62ndminute.

Igbinoba’s second of the evening, 11 minutes from the end, completed the rout as United progressed to the first round of the competition where crafty customers, Al Merreikh lay in wait.

GAME THREE
Rivers United 3-0 Al Merreikh (Sudan)
Date: March 12, 2017
Venue: Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt

United needed to win comprehensively in this one and keeping a clean sheet was extremely vital as well.

The Pride of Rivers achieved set objectives on both fronts with Ivoirian marksman, Guy Kuemian netting two goals in as many first half minutes to set the tone for an important victory.

Esosa Igbinoba’s well-taken effort with nine minutes left on the clock gave the Nigerians a healthy lead ahead of the decisive return fixture in Omdurman.

Rivers United could do no wrong; the Port Harcourt boys were riding the crest of a wave, seemingly reclaiming their mojo and an aura of invincibility which sent shivers down the spine of many an opposition side but the wheels would come off spectacularly just seven days later.

GAME FOUR
Al-Merreikh (Sudan) 4-0 Rivers United
Date: March 18, 2017
Venue: Al-Merrikh Stadium, Omdurman

Many Rivers United fans will never forget this day and for the wrong reasons too.

Bruised, battered and dismissed with tails firmly between legs, this was a day United’s stars were reduced to schoolboys chasing shadows for most parts.

It was also the Bakry Al-Madina show!

The Sudanese dynamite literally took United to the cleaners with a man-of-the-match display capped with a brilliant first half hattrick that levelled the aggregate score on the night at a bouncing and absolutely charged Al-Merreikh Stadium, Omdurman.

Amir Kamal struck the final nail into the United coffin as the Sudanese side completed an improbable comeback whilst leaving pain and gnashing of teeth, from a Nigerian perspective, in their wake.

CAF CONFEDERATION
The elimination of Rivers United in CAF Champions League meant the side now dropped to the continent’s second-tier club competition – the Caf Confederation Cup.

Standing in their path to the group stages of the competition was fluid-playing Rwandan champions, Rayon Sports in the playoff round.

GAME ONE (Play-off round)
Rivers United 2-0 Rayon Sports (Rwanda)
Date: April 16, 2017
Venue: Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt
Rivers United’s stars had to rouse themselves from the disappointment of the morale-shattering defeat to Al-Merreikh in the CAF Champions League as they faced the winning machine from Rwanda.

Rayon were in fantastic form in the Rwanda National Football League and had lost just once in 17 league matches prior to facing United in the playoffs.

United however proved too strong for ‘Gikundiro’ and duly won 2-0 thanks to goals, either side of half time, from Emeka Atuloma and Guy Kuemian.

The performance on the day was however far from convincing and doubts were raised about United’s ability to weather the expected storm in the return leg in Kigali.

GAME TWO
Rayon Sports (Rwanda) 0-0 Rivers United
Date: April 22, 2017
Venue: Amahoro Stadium, Kigali

This was one of the greatest days in the history of the football club (Rivers United FC).

United was roundly written off by the book makers before kick-off, branded no-hopers and sitting ducks that would be easily picked apart by Gikundiro.

In reality however, the ‘Pride of Rivers’ produced one of their most accomplished performances on the continent in a display that integrated class, panache and the ability to stand up to a vociferous crowd that represented the proverbial twelfth man at a rocking Amahoro.

There were nervous moments particularly in the first half when the dangerous Kwizera Pierrot curled a 25-yard free kick just over but United too should have scored in the opening stanza through Bolaji Sakin who just failed to keep a fiercely-struck volley low and on target.

United were growing in confidence and looking the more accomplished side as the minutes wore on but Rayon were handed a lifeline as Ifeanyi Nweke received a straight red card for catching Savio Dominique with a high boot.

Crisis? What crisis!

The Nigerians were not to be denied though as a gladiatorial display in the final 33 minutes saw the side with the numerical disadvantage reach the group stage.

CAF CONFEDERATION CUP GROUP STAGE
Rivers United was drawn in Group A of the competition alongside Kampala Capital City Authourity (KCCA, Uganda) and two sides from North Africa, Club Africain (Tunisia) and Faith Union Sportive, Rabat (FUS Rabat, Morocco).

On paper, United looked the weakest of the four sides (given the pedigree of the other three in Caf club competition) but the Pride of Rivers was on the lookout to upset the apple cart.

GAME ONE
Club Africain (Tunisia) 3-1 Rivers United
Date: May 14, 2017
Venue: Stade Olympique de Radès (Radès)
This is a game players of Rivers United will still be scratching their heads over, as regards their failure to avoid defeat.

Bilel Ifa headed home an Ibrahim Chenihi corner for the game’s opening goal somewhat against the run of play in the 23rd minute before shambolic defending gifted the hosts a second on the stroke of half time from the penalty spot with Oussama Darragi making no mistakes from 12 yards.

Odumegwu Egbuonu pulled one back for the visitors before the luckless Joseph Douhadji fortuitously diverted a cross past Sunday Rotimi to restore Club Africain’s two-goal cushion.

Emeka Ogbugh blasted a late penalty into orbit as United tried, in futility, to hurl themselves back into the contest.

GAME TWO
Rivers United 1-0 FUS Rabat (Morocco)
Date: May 24, 2017
Venue: Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt

This was a stern test for United against a well-drilled Moroccan side that gave very little away for most parts.

Emeka Atuloma swept home Zoumana Doumbia’s cross from close range for the game’s only goal in the 72ndminute.

KCCA also won, against Club Africain, on the same match day in Uganda which meant that all four clubs in the group had identical records, as regards the number of points accumulated.

It also fuelled belief, at that stage, that goals difference could ultimately turn out to be the tie breaker in the group.

GAME THREE
KCCA (Uganda) 2-1 Rivers United
Date: April 22, 2017
Venue: Star Times Uganda Stadium (Kampala)
This was a high octane contest dominated by the hosts.

In all honestly, United were lucky to lose only 1-2 as the Kasasiro Boys carved open their defence time and again.

Derrick Nsibambi scored a fortuitous, albeit deserved opening goal for KCCA on 16 minutes but United pegged them back through Bolaji Sakin who smashed home a fearsome volley in the 33rd minute to level matters.

Persistent pressure led to a second goal for the hosts, duly finished off by the impressive Nsibambi as United suffered their second reverse on the road in the group stage.

GAME FOUR
Rivers United 2-1 KCCA (Uganda)
Date: May 24, 2017
Venue: Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt

This was a game United could and should have won by a very wide goal margin but it was not to be.

Bernard Ovoke scored the competition’s fastest goal inside the opening 21 seconds with Obomate Frederick adding the second on the quarter hour mark.

United however allowed KCCA a route back into the match when Geoffrey Sserunkuma netted in first half additional time.

It meant United could afford to make no mistakes against North African opposition in their last two group games.

It was always going to be prove a tough ask.

GAME FIVE
Rivers United 0-2 Club Africain (Tunisia)
Date: July 2, 2017
Venue: Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt

This was a make or break game for United but they failed to come out tops against a Tunisian side that bided their time, picking their moments and hitting the opposition on the under belly with deadly efficiency.

After a tight first half, the Tunisian took the lead in the 63rd minute when Mannoubi Haddad expertly curled home a beauty of a free kick.

The hosts were stunned and stormed forward in search of a leveller.

Bernard Ovoke missed their best opportunity to get back on level terms when he came face to face the Club Africain goal keeper, Hamza Agrebi only to drag his effort agonizingly wide.

Festus Austine scored an own goal a minute to the end to send the tears streaming down the faces of the home faithful.

United now needed a combination of results to go their way on the final match day – an improbable miracle, according to many – if they were to reach the knock out stages of the competition.

GAME SIX
Rivers FUS Rabat (Morocco) 2-1 Rivers United
Date: July 7, 2017
Venue: Stade du FUS (Hay Nahda) (Rabat)
United needed a win in Rabat while requiring Club Africain to record a high margin victory over KCCA in Tunis, to progress to the quarter finals of the competition.

Club Africain held up their own end of the bargain, thrashing the Ugandan champions 4-0 at the Rades but United suffered late heart break in Rabat to crash out of the competition.

Bolaji Sakin scored on the stroke of half time to hand the Nigerians a shock lead going into the break but they wilted under unrelenting wave after wave of FUS attacks in the second half.

Youssef El Gnaoui equalized for the hosts in the 52nd minute before Mohammed Fouzair completed the turnaround with just two minutes remaining.

It signalled the end of United’s sojourn on the continent as they finished bottom of the group.

PART TWO: Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL)
Two seasons ago, United went into the final round of league matches with a mathematical chance of nicking the title.

Last term, United went into the final round of games knowing that mathematically, there was still a chance that they could get relegated.

It was a season that started so well yet ended in anti-climactic fashion.

January 2017
United started the season on a flyer and went unbeaten in the first month after playing five NPFL matches.

The Pride of Rivers opened their campaign with a superb 2-1 win over El-Kanemi Warriors – a result that flattered the visitors as the hosts dominated for large parts and could have won by as much as five clear goals.

Emeka Ogbugh and Guy Kuemian were the goal scorers for United while Bello Kofarmata plundered the consolation for the visitors with practically the last kick of the game.

On match day two, Rivers United embarked on the short trip to Uyo to face Akwa United in an exciting clash that finished in a 1-1 draw.

Cyril Olisema opened the scoring for the hosts for the hosts at the ‘Nest of Champions’ but Bernard Ovoke levelled matters for Rivers United as they claimed a share of the spoils.

On match day three, United beat Niger Tornadoes 1-0 with Guy Kuemian scoring the decisive goal for the home side.

A gutsy 0-0 draw with FC Ifeanyiubah in Nnewi followed on match day four before cracks began to appear on the wall as Lobi Stars claimed a point in Port Harcourt against United in a 0-0 draw on match day five.

Round up (January, 2017)
Rivers United  2 - 1 El Kanemi Warriors (January 15)
Akwa United   1 - 1 Rivers United (January 18)

February 2017
United played two games in the CAF Champions League this month (versus AS Real Bamako) and three in the NPFL.

While the Pride of Rivers were undefeated in the Caf Champions League, they failed to win any of the three NPFL matches they prosecuted in the second month of the year.

On February 5, they visited the Lekan Salami Stadium Ibadan where the opposition came in the shape of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC).

United were mediocre; torn to pieces by the Oluyole Warriors and extremely lucky to only lose the game by two goals to one.

Sunday Faleye and Jide Apena scored for the hosts in a richly-deserved victory while Lukman Mohammed scored for the visitors.

United’s second league game in the month under review was at home to Kano Pillars, a tense game that finished in a 1-1 draw.

Godbless Asamoah’s brilliant first half effort was cancelled out by Amos Gyang as United recorded second home draw of the season.

The alarm bells were now well and truly ringing in Port Harcourt!

On February 26, United played their third and final NPFL game of the season against struggling Sunshine Stars in Akure.

Ayo Saka (who would join United in the second half of the season) scored the game’s decisive goal, an absolute belter from range as the month ended on a sour note for the darlings of Port Harcourt.

Round up (February,2017)

March 2017
This was the busiest month of Rivers United thus far as the club played seven matches (five in the NPFL and two in the CAF Champions League).

A brilliant performance in Bauchi against Wikki Tourists got things underway on March 1.

In truth, United should have won the game decided at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi by as much as three clear goals.

A seemingly legitimate goal scored by Emeka Ogbugh in the second half was ruled out for offside as both sides eventually settled for a point in the thrilling encounter.

Four days later, United failed to hit similar heights but still did enough to beat the then reigning champions, Enugu Rangers 1-0 at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt.

Esosa Igbinoba’s cheeky finish in the second minute proved decisive as United tripped the Flying Antelopes as both sides shaped up for decisive CAF Champions League games against North African opposition.

United then lost to MFM, 2-1 in Lagos with Christian Weli’s scoring either side of Stephen Odey’s brace at the Agege Township Stadium.

Mfon Udoh was to pile further misery on United with the only goal of the game from the penalty spot as Enyimba won a tight contest 1-0 at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar.

Three days later, there would be no home comforts for United as they drew 0-0 with Plateau United in Port Harcourt.

Round up (March, 2017)
Wikki Tourists 0-0 Rivers United (March 1)
Rivers United 1-0 Enugu Rangers (March 5)
MFM 2-1 Rivers United (March 22)

April, 2017
Another busy month for Rivers United as the club played seven matches (which included two in the CAF Confederation Cup).

United lost 0-1 to Gombe United at the Pantami Stadium before claiming two home wins on the bounce against ABS FC and Abia Warriors.

Godbless Asamoah and Christian Weli provided the goals in United’s win against ABS while Emeka Ogbugh scored the decisive goal in the win against the Warriors in Port Harcourt.

United rounded up the month with successive losses on the road, 0-2 to Katsina United and 0-1 to Nasarawa United in Lafia.

May, 2017
Five matches were played by Rivers United this month (two of these were prosecuted in the CAF Confederation Cup).

Of the three NPFL matches played, United won two and lost one.

First to be dispatched were Remo Stars on May 3 with Bernard Ovoke netting the game’s winner on 44 minutes.

United then overcame Nasarawa United 1-0, with ten men after captain, Festus Austine was sent off in the 33rdminute for a second bookable offence.

Ayo Saka, making only his second start of the season scored an enthralling team goal to hand maximum points to the hosts.

The month ended in disappointment as United lost 1-2 to El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri with Onoriode Odah Marshall scoring the consolation for the visitors.

Round up (May, 2017)

June, 2017
United played six matches this month with two of them prosecuted in the CAF Confederation Cup and the others in domestic competition (NPFL).

The Pride of Rivers won two the matches played in the NPFL this month and lost the other two.

On June 7, United lost 0-1 to Niger Tornadoes at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja before facing FC Ifeanyiubah in Port Harcourt four days later, in arguably their most dramatic game of the season.

With the scores pegged at 1-1 after Bolaji Sakin and Prince Aggreh had netted for their sides on 61 and 80 minutes respectively.

Veteran striker, Efosa Eguakun however had other ideas as his stunning strike on the stroke of full time handed United a 2-victory that will be talked about for years to come.

United then lost to Lobi Stars in Makurdi before finishing the month on a high with a 1-0 win over Shooting Stars in Port Harcourt.

Odumegwu Egbuonu scored the winner for United against the Ibadan club.

Round up (June, 2017)
Niger Tornadoes 1-0 Rivers United (June 7)

July, 2017
Eight matches were prosecuted by Rivers United this month (including two in the CAF Confederation Cup).

For the first (and only time) in two seasons, United lost a game at home in the NPFL.

That loss, in the hands of Sunshine Stars on July 19, meant the ‘Pride of Rivers’ now had their work cut out as regards surviving the drop (to the second tier Nigeria National League) at the end of the season.

A win and a draw (away from home) in the previous week in matches against high-flying MFM FC and ABS (in Illorin) had set the pulses racing amongst the home faithful, triggering belief that the club could end the season on a high but the Owena Waves had other ideas!

Christian Weli scored the winner against MFM on July 12 while Guy Kuemian, Emeka Ogbugh and Chiwendu Ali scored as United overpowered Wikki Tourists 3-1 on July 23.

United were held to a 1-1 draw by Akwa United in one of the toughest but arguably the most aesthetically-pleasing game decided at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium last season.

Musa Newman put the ‘Promise Keepers’ in front early in the first half but Emeka Ogbugh ensured there would be no second home reverse for the ‘Pride of Rivers’ when he headed home Chiwendu Ali’s expertly-taken free kick, in off the cross bar soon after.

The month ended disappointingly for United as they lost 1-2 to Enugu Rangers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu with red-hot Ogbugh plundering a brilliantly-worked consolation for the visitors.

Round up (July, 2017)
Rivers United 1-0 MFM (July 12)
ABS 0-0 Rivers United (June 16)
Rivers United 0-1 Sunshine Stars (July 19)

August, 2017
This was decision month for United as five crucial ‘finals’ were prosecuted by the football club.

A 0-2 reverse in Kano against Pillars was largely expected by the bookies but when United failed to beat Katsina United in Port Harcourt on August 7, the jury came out in full force.

The 1-1 draw at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium was seen, by many, as the result which would ultimately condemn United to a place in the NNL but there was to be a late stirring from hibernation!

A stunning 3-1 win over Remo Stars in Sagamu raised hopes of a ‘Houdini-esque’ escape and when United followed up a 2-1 victory over Enyimba with a gutsy 1-1 draw at champions, Plateau United, it was clear that the ‘Port Harcourt Landlords’ were made of stern stuff.

Round up (August, 2017)
Kano Pillars 2-0 Rivers United (August 3)
Rivers United 1-1 Katsina United (August 8)
Remo Stars 1-3 Rivers United (August 13)
Rivers United 2-1 Enyimba (August 20)
Plateau United 1-1 Rivers United

September, 2017
The hard work had been done in a fantastic August for Rivers United as just one more win would be sufficient to virtually assure elite status for next season.

The win was secured in brilliant fashion as Gombe United was ruthlessly dispatched 3-0 in Port Harcourt on September 3.

A 1-4 loss to Abia Warriors in Umuahia on the final day of the season did little to dampen spirits as a difficult campaign came to an end.

Round up (September, 2017)
Rivers United 3-0 Gombe United (September 3)
Abia Warriors 4-1 Rivers United (August 9)
