NWPL Match Preview: Sunshine, Confluence Queens Set Tone for Season Opener



With the 2015/16 Nigeria Women Premier League season set to kick-off this weekend across various centres in the country, Akure will be the place to be.
Reigning Federation Cup champions, Sunshine Queens Football Club will welcome semi-finalists, Confluence Queens FC to the Akure Township Stadium in a game rated the star match of the match day one of the new season.

It will be witnessed by top personalities and stakeholders within the Women Football Family.

Both teams will go into Saturday's match with slight shake-ups in their technical departments and squads.

Sunshine Queens came fifth in the Super Six while visitors Confluence Queens ended Sixth.

Coach Kayode Olujohungbe has been promoted to the state's NPFL side Sunshine Stars and replaced by his assistant Wemimo Oni. 
On the other side, Confluence Queens drafted former Kogi United assistant coach Shola Adewuyi to take the place of coach Sulieman Adamu known as "Zico".

Players such as Emenike Ijeoma, Maureen Okpalla, Ogechi Joseph, Abibat Agbaji, Osinachi Amaewhule, Bukola Awolusi and Chima Nwosu Fabiyi were brought in to reinforce the Lokoja-based outfit. They could be handed their debuts in Akure.

Former Minsk star Ijeoma Obi and Onyebuchi Iheoma swapped Rivers Angels for life with the Owena Mermaids.

The two sides will be looking forward to start their new season on a high note as the Week 1 encounter will be a battle to finish in Akure.

In their last two meetings, Sunshine Queens won 2-0 in Akure while they lost the return leg 3-0 in Lokoja.
The Queens from Lokoja will also hope to avenge their last defeat to Sunshine when they lost 1-2 in a friendly played at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja.

Kickoff is 4pm at the Akure Township Stadium on Saturday.
