NANPF Cautions Players on Shortchange of Transfer

With the season opener of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fast approaching and with clubs looking to ship out old and ship in new players, the umbrella body of Nigerian footballers, the National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF), has advised players against any transfer agreement that would shortchange them of their outstanding entitlements for last season.

NANPF in a statement released by its General Secretary, Austin Popo, said the alert has become necessary as it has uncovered some moves by some clubs asking players to forfeit their entitlements in exchange for transfer clearance.
The statement read:

“There is no doubt that following the end of the 2015/2016 league season and the commencement of the 2016/2017 season fast approaching, some players must have been dropped by their clubs while a few others will be seeking to transfer to clubs.

Either ways, the National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers, NANPF, advices both the affected clubs and players to follow laid down rules by the relevant provisions of the league governing such process.

“There is a worrisome development currently going on whereby some clubs are insisting that players, either dropped or sacked by them, should exchange monies owed them as unpaid salaries, bonuses and other entitlements for their transfer clearance certificate. The Union advices the affected players not to fall victim of the illegal demand by the clubs. They should, instead, report the matter to the union who will take it up with the various leagues and the NFF.

In other words, our advice to all players is, do not sign to agree to collect your clearance in exchange for your unpaid salaries, bonuses and other entitlements owed you by your club. It is unlawful and also shortchanging yourself by doing that.”
